Edinboro Edged by West Liberty in Saturday Night Contest

ERIE, Pa. (March 25, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team played West Liberty to a tight contest on Saturday night at the Westwood Racquet Club. After taking two of three doubles matches, Edinboro could only gather two singles victories as the Hilltoppers edged the Fighting Scots by a 5-4 decision. The Fighting Scots dropped to 9-5, while the Hilltoppers improved to 4-4.

Edinboro put two wins on the board when Vitor Albanese and Mateus beat out Baptiste Perrin and Santiago Gutierrez at number-one doubles, 9-7, and Daniel Fernandez and Kevin Mboko defeated Andrew Ponder and Matt Tully in the second slot by an 8-6 score. Albanese and Mauricio Santos earned the Fighting Scots' only singles wins at the first and third spots, respectively. Albanese beat Perrin, 6-4 and 6-3, to improve to 24-4 on the year. Mauricio Santos downed Matt Tully by 7-5 and 6-0 scores.

With the match tied at 4-4, the deciding contest saw Fernandez battle Ponder to three sets at number-two singles. Fernandez won the first set, 5-7, but Ponder went on to win set two, 7-6 (4), and the third set, 6-4, for the win.

The Fighting Scots' next match will be at Charleston on Friday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m.
