Men’s Tennis Dominates Charleston (WV) 7-2 on Friday Night

CHARLESTON, W. Va. (March 31, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team, determined to put behind a stretch where they lost four of their last six contests, dominated Charleston by a 7-2 score in a road contest Friday night. The Fighting Scots swept the doubles competition and tacked on four singles wins for good measure as they climbed to 10-5 on the year. The Golden Eagles fell to 8-5. Edinboro and Charleston were ranked fifth and eighth, respectively, in the latest ITA Atlantic Region poll.

Friday's contest was the first of Edinboro's two-match road trip in West Virginia. The Fighting Scots are set to play at West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at noon.

The number-three doubles team of Mauricio Santos and Kolja Hein earned Edinboro's first win of the night with an 8-4 victory over Jamie Gibson and Jason Prince. Daniel Fernandez and Kevin Mboko beat Ben Lakeman and Alek Gracin at number two by an 8-4 score, while Vitor Albanese and Mateus Santos defeated Alec Foote and William Humphrey, 8-5, in the one spot to supply the doubles sweep.

The number-one singles match saw Albanese and Alec Foote, two nationally-ranked and the top regionally-ranked players, square off. Albanese, ranked first in the Atlantic Region and 37th in the nation, won by 6-2 and 6-4 sets over Foote, who was ranked second in the region and 44th nationally.

Edinboro's three remaining singles wins were won in three sets. Fernandez won the first set, 6-3, over Lakeman at number-two singles and, after losing the tiebreaker in the second set, bounced back to win set three by a 6-3 score. Mauricio Santos rallied from a one-set deficit over Alek Gracin, posting 6-1 and 7-5 wins in the final two sets at three singles. Mateus Santos, after being shut out in the first set by Dom Centofanti, came back to win the singles four match with 6-4 and 6-2 wins in the second and third set, respectively.
