Edinboro Outlasts Mercyhurst 5-4 for Third Straight PSAC Regular Season Title

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 12, 2017) – After a long hiatus, the Edinboro University men's tennis team renewed its local rivalry with Mercyhurst on Wednesday, hosting the Lakers in a PSAC contest. The two sides met for the first time since last season's NCAA Atlantic Region II championship, and Wednesday's match had its share of close moments. The Lakers led the Fighting Scots, 2-1, after doubles, but Edinboro bounced back with four singles wins to edge out a 5-4 victory and clinch their third straight PSAC regular season title.

The win also gave head coach Lee Underwood's team their third straight regular season sweep of PSAC opponents, and extended their conference win streak to 27 matches, including postseason contests. The Fighting Scots improved to 14-5 and 5-0 in the PSAC, while the Lakers now stand at 12-8 with a 4-1 league ledger. Edinboro and Mercyhurst were ranked third and sixth, respectively, in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll, released earlier today.

Daniel Fernandez clinched the victory for Edinboro at two singles, beating out Joaquin Aguilera in the third-set tiebreaker 7-6 (3) after falling behind, 6-5, earlier in the set. Fernandez won the first set, 6-4, with Aguilera taking set two, 6-3. Vitor Albanese picked up his 29th win of the season with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over Nenad Terzic at number one. Mauricio Santos and Mateus Santos (no relation) accounted for the Fighting Scots' remaining singles victories at the third and fourth spots, respectively, both in straight sets.

With doubles defeats in the first and third positions, Fernandez and Kevin Mboko salvaged an 8-5 win for Edinboro over Sebastian Pardo and Arseniy Sklyarov at two to keep pace with Mercyhurst. The tandem improved to a team-best 15-1. Albanese and Mateus Santos suffered just its second loss of the year at number one with an 8-5 defeat to Terzic and Cormac McCooey, dropping them to 13-2.

The Fighting Scots clinched the top seed for the PSAC Tournament, and will take on fourth-seeded Kutztown in the semifinals on Friday, April 21 at Bloomsburg University. Mercyhurst, the two seed, will square off against third-seeded Bloomsburg in the other semifinals contest.
