Fighting Scots Beat West Virginia Wesleyan 5-2 to Wrap Up Weekend Road Trip

Buckhannon, W. Va. (April 1, 2017) – The Edinboro Unviersity men's tennis team wrapped up their two-match weekend trip to West Virginia on Saturday with a 5-2 win at West Virginia Wesleyan. The Fighting Scots, after beating Charleston (W. Va.) on Friday night, improved to 11-5. The Bobcats dropped to 4-5. West Virginia Wesleyan and Edinboro are ranked third and fifth, respectively, in the latest ITA Atlantic Region poll.

Saturday's match, originally scheduled for 12:00 p.m., was moved indoors and pushed back to 4:00 p.m. due to inclement weather. The contest was played under "first to five" rules.

Like their win over the Golden Eagles on Friday, Edinboro swept the doubles matches. Vitor Albanese and Mateus Santos blanked Pierre-Olivier Bedard and Lukas Laipold, 8-0, at the number-one spot. Daniel Fernandez and Kevin Mboko defeated Nathan Sabate and Ferran Berga in the second slot, 8-5. Mauricio Santos and Kolja Hein completed the sweep with a 9-7 win over Ramon Rodriguez and Pedro Nassar at number three.

The Bobcats looked to rally in the singles competition, pulling out a pair of wins at the second and third spots. Edinboro clinched the match after Albanese defeated Sabate, 6-4, 7-6 (5) at the one spot, and Mateus Santos beat Jacobo Rendon at number four, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Head coach Lee Underwood's team returns to PSAC action next weekend with an eastern road trip at Kutztown on Friday, April 7 at 3:00 p.m., followed by Bloomsburg on Saturday, April 8 at 12:00 p.m.
