Men’s Tennis Falls to Mercyhurst 5-4 in PSAC Finals, Ends Hopes of Fourth Straight League Title

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (April 22, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team's quest for a fourth straight PSAC title came to an end on Saturday, as Mercyhurst claimed a 5-4 win over the Fighting Scots in the league championship match at Bloomsburg University. The defeat dropped Edinboro to 15-6, and snapped the Scots' 28-match win streak against PSAC opponents, including the postseason, which dated back to 2014. Head coach Lee Underwood's team now awaits a potential selection for the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament, with the selection show taking place on Tuesday, April 25 at 8:30 p.m.

The Fighting Scots were ranked third in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll, with the Lakers, now 14-8, picked sixth. Edinboro and Mercyhurst have become familiar postseason opponents, having squared off in each of the last three PSAC Championships. Both sides even competed in last year's NCAA Atlantic Region 2 finals match, where Edinboro pulled out a 5-3 victory. The Fighting Scots entered as the top seed in the conference tournament, and defeated fourth-seeded Kutztown, 5-0, in their PSAC semifinals match on Friday. The second-seeded Lakers downed third-seeded Bloomsburg, 5-1.16690

Edinboro held a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition. Vitor Albanese and Mateus Santos defeated Nenad Terzic and Cormac McCooey at number-one doubles, 8-6, while Mauricio Santos and Alexander Anderson beat Sebastian Pardo and Arseniy Sklyarov in the third spot by an 8-6 score. The two team of Daniel Fernandez and Kevin Mboko were edged, 8-6, by the Lakers' Joaquin Aguilera and Conor McCooey.

Albanese and Fernandez each pulled out three-set singles wins for Edinboro in the first and second spots, respectively. Albanese defeated Terzic, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Fernandez downed Cormac McCooey, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. Mercyhurst climbed back with a pair of straight-set victories in the third and fifth singles spots. Aguilera defeated Mauricio Santos, 6-2 and 7-6 (3), while Conor McCooey beat Mboko, 6-4 and 6-1. The remaining two matches went to three sets. The Lakers knotted the match at 4-4 after Skylarov defeated Thomas McCoy at number six, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (5). Pardo gave Mercyhurst the win with a 1-6, 7-6 (5) and 6-4 win over Mateus Santos.
