Myers, Miller Pick Up Wins Over Nationally Ranked Opponents In Loss to No. 10 Virginia Tech

EDINBORO, Pa.  – The Edinboro wrestling team picked up the two matches between ranked opponents, but fell to visiting #10 Virginia Tech, 20-15, inside McComb Fieldhouse on Friday night. The Fighting Scots move to 3-2 overall on the season. The Hokies improve to 9-2.
 
The highlights of the match featured bouts at 133 and 285 lbs. between two nationally-ranked wrestlers. Redshirt sophomore Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), ranked No. 18, upset No. 14 Dennis Gustafson for the second time this season in a 6-4. Myers never trailed in the match as he recorded the takedown late in the first period and held onto a 2-1 lead into the second. Myers scored two escapes in the second to hold onto the 4-3 lead heading into the final period. Gustafson tied the bout up at 4-4 with an escape with less than a minute left, but Myers got the takedown with six seconds left to secure the 6-4 decision.
 
#14 Billy Miller (285 lbs.) went scoreless in the first period against #18 Andrew Dunn. Miller used an escape nine seconds into the second period and the two wrestlers were even heading into the final period. Dunn got the escape early in the third period before Miller regained the lead, 3-1, with a takedown with 49 seconds remaining. Dunn recorded the escape 10 seconds later, but Miller held on for the 3-2 decision.

Edinboro also picked up wins at 125, 157, and 174 lbs. #11 Sean Russell continued his run in 2018 with a 11-5 decision over Kyle Norstrem. Andrew Shomers (157 lbs.) never trailed in his bout against B.C. LaPrade. He led 5-0 heading into the final period and finished with a 6-2 win thanks to riding time bonus point. Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.) remained undefeated on the season, improving to 9-0 with a 9-8 decision over Cody Hughes, using an escape with five seconds remaining.

The Fighting Scots return to the mat on Sunday, January 21 as they host their second straight ranked opponent, #19 Rider. The Broncs come in with an 8-2 record and 2-0 in the EWL after a 30-6 Friday night win over Cleveland State. Match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
