The All-Time Series

IUP leads 59-23-4
IUP has won the last four meetings with the Fighting Scots. Edinboro last prevailed in 2013, winning a 36-30 decision at IUP.

Last Year's Game
Indiana(Pa.) 38, Edinboro 7
Turnovers continued to plague the Fighting Scots as they opened the PSAC West campaign at sixth-ranked IUP. Five interceptions led to a pair of touchdowns for the Crimson Hawks. Despite being held to a season-low 287 yards, Edinboro was able to move inside the IUP 10 on four occasions, but could only come up with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jake Sisson to James Clark in the third quarter. The Edinboro defense was unable to find a way to stop IUP's standout quarterback, Lenny Williams. Williams threw for 274 yards and 4 TDs, adding 60 yards rushing. JoJo Gause caught three of those touchdown passes. Clark continued his hot play with eight catches for 88 yards, with Sisson throwing for 221 yards while completing 26-of-47 passes.  IUP would hold a 21-0 lead at halftime on a pair of Williams' touchdown passes and a Bullock touchdown run. The Crimson Hawks added ten points in the first six minutes of the third quarter as the lead grew to 31-0. The Sisson-to-Clark connection got Edinboro on the scoreboard with just over five minutes remaining in the third period.

Last Week
Edinboro 14, Clarion 7
The Fighting Scots overcame a pair of early turnovers and rainy conditions to win for the ninth straight time at Clarion's Memorial Stadium. The recipe was plenty of Walter Fletcher and a staunch defense. Edinboro would lose fumbles deep in Clarion territory on its first two possessions. The Fighting Scots would take a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter on a play that probably wasn't drawn up by offensive coordinator Chris Limbach. The wet ball dribbled back to QB Jarrod Kellar, who scooped it up and heaved it deep downfield. A Clarion defender was camped under it, but the ball glanced off his hands to a waiting Ta'Nauz Gregory, who caught it at his ankles at the four and completed a 33-yard TD pass. Clarion came right back to knot the score at 7-7 just before halftime, aided by a pair of Edinboro penalties. The score remained that way until midway through the fourth quarter, when Fletcher went coast-to-coast for an 80-yard TD run. The Boro defense then sacked Clarion QB Jeff Clemens three times in the final series. Edinboro had six sacks on the day and held Clarion to 228 total yards. Fletcher accounted for most of Edinboro's offense, rushing for 243 yards on 33 carries and catching 5 passes. Kellar completed 13-of-23 passes, but for just 94 yards. Gregory had 4 catches for 43 yards. Brandon Anderson led the defense with 11 tackles, including a sack.

Indiana(Pa.) 56, Seton Hill 14
Quarterback Lenny Williams totaled four touchdowns and the Crimson Hawks totaled season highs of 545 yards and 324 yards rushing to easily defeat visiting Seton Hill. Williams threw three touchdown passes, two to JoJo Gause, and ran for a fourth score. He would complete 8-of-13 passes for 151 yards and added 20 yards rushing. Justice Evans and Tyler Balega each ran for over 100 yards.  Evans registered his second straight 100-yard game with 137 yards on 11 carries, while Balega had 101 yards on 19 totes. Chris Temple scored on a pair of one-yard TD runs. The IUP defense intercepted three Seton Hill passes and limited the Griffins to 228 total yards.

The Coaches
Wayne Bradford (Salisbury St. '90) was named Edinboro's 15th head coach on March 29, 2017 and led Edinboro to a 7-4 record in his first season. After serving as interim head coach in 2017, that tag was removed after less than a week after the conclusion of the season. With his tenth win as head coach coming last week against East Stroudsburg, Bradford is the fastest coach to reach 10 wins at Edinboro. Bradford has worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots' defensive coordinator. Bradford has master-minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. A year ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro's teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9-4 and reached the Super Region One semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 121 wins.

Paul Tortorella (Slippery Rock '85) is in his second season as the head coach at IUP and owns an impressive 20-3 record.  Like Bradford, Tortorella was on an interim tag last year. He would lead IUP to a 13-1 record, winning the PSAC championship and the Super Region One title before losing to West Florida in the NCAA Division II semifinals. IUP would finish third in the AFCA Division II Top 25. Tortorella was named the Division II co-Coach and Super Region One Coach of the Year by the Don Hansen Footbal Gazette. He also earned PSAC West Coach of the Year honors.  Tortorella took over for Curt Cignetti in early January 2017 after spending the previous 22 years as IUP's defensive coordinator, and was the associate head coach from 2011-16. His IUP defenses consistently ranked among the best in Division II, with his 2016 squad ranking third in the country in interceptions (24) and caused turnovers (35). Since his first season at IUP in 1995, Tortorella has coached 15 defensive All-Americans, with 107 All-PSAC West honorees. Four players earned PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year honors under his tutelage. Ten IUP squads were selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs during his tenure as the defensive coordinator. Prior to his arrival at IUP, Tortorella served as an assistant coach at Maryland and Akron.

IUP has won by an average of 22.5 points over the last four meetings.  The Crimson Hawks have won the last four meetings at Sox Harrison Stadium, with Edinboro last winning 24-17 in 2008.
  • Edinboro has four of the top active career performers in Division II. Running back Walter Fletcher ranks among the active leaders in scoring and rushing, wide receiver James Clark is in the career receptions leaders, while fellow wideout Ta'Nauz Gregory is in the kickoff return leaders. Finally, cornerback Zuril Hendrick is the career leader in interceptions.
  • Edinboro was ranked in a pair of preseason publications. The Fighting Scots were 18th in Lindy's Sports College Football National 2018 Preview, and 24th in the Street & Smith's College Football Magazine Preseason Top 25. Edinboro was among "others receiving votes" in the AFCA Division II Top 25 earlier in the year.
  • A trio of Edinboro players earned All-American honors a year ago. Walter Fletcher was a consensus All-American, including second team Associated Press Division II All-America honors, after ranking second in Division II in rushing. Zuril Hendrick and James Clark were named to the Don Hansen All-America Team, with Hendrick named to the first team after leading Division II in interceptions, and Clark a third team choice after ranking third in Division II in receptions per game.
