The Game Story
  • After improving to 2-1 with an 87-56 pre-Thanksgiving Day win over Penn State Shenango on Tuesday night, Edinboro hits the highway looking to slow down a high-powered Charleston(WV) team that was picked to finish third in the Mountain East Conference coaches' preseason poll.. The Golden Eagles play for the first time since last Monday, and come in with a 3-2 record but riding a two-game losing streak.
  • The Fighting Scots opened the year with an 81-63 win over Thiel at McComb Fieldhouse. Their first road game resulted in a 74-60 loss at Lake Erie, before returning home for the win over Penn State Shenango.
  • Edinboro must try to slow down a Charleston team that is averaging 95.2 ppg., good for ninth in Division II in scoring offense. The Golden Bears have scored no fewer than 89 points in all five games. They opened the season with three straight wins before dropping back-to-back road contests at Fairmont State (99-96) and Shepherd (101-93). In the latter contest, junior guard Drew Rackley exploded for 47 points, boosting his scoring average to 27.2 ppg. That ranks third in Division II.
  • The Charleston contest will mark the final non-conference game for Edinboro. The final 22 games will be against PSAC competition.        
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots would finish 13-9 in PSAC action, good for fourth place. They went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round, followed by an upset of top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. Edinboro would lose to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals.
  • With three starters departing who combined for a total of 1,348 points, Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. After earning second team All-PSAC West accolades a year ago, Anthony Coleman is averaging 14.0 ppg. over the first three games. The 6'3" guard emerged as one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC in his first season. He finished third on the team and 24th in the PSAC in scoring at 15.2 ppg., while leading the team in 3-pointers, making 72-of-174 (41.4 pct.). He ranked sixth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage and was tied for seventh in 3-point field goals made per game (2.5).     
  • Edinboro has four players averaging in double digits. Trey Staunch comes in at 14.0 ppg. in the last two games after joining the team following the conclusion of the football season. Jaryn Simpson adds 12.3 ppg. and DeAnthony Owens 12.0 ppg.

  • Keshawn Liggins posted his third 30-point effort of the season and the bench played a key role as Edinboro posted a 93-73 win over Charleston(WV) at McComb Fieldhouse. Liggins, a 6'5" senior in his first season as a Fighting Scot after transferring from Idaho State, dropped in a season-high 38 points while playing an all-around outstanding. He would fall short of his seventh straight double-double, but still finished with seven rebounds and six assists. He made 14-of-21 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and was 7-of-8 at the line.
  • The Fighting Scots got great production from the bench. Alex Jay played 23 minutes and contributed a season-high 13 points. The 6'3" freshman made 5-of-8 shots, including 3-of-5 3-pointers. He added five assists. Fellow freshman Jaryn Simpson contributed 10 points with five assists, making 4-of-6 field goals, including 2-of-3 3-pointers.
  • Edinboro once again received great production from the pivot, as Jack Frank started and finished with six points and a game-high nine rebounds. Trey Staunch came off the bench and totaled 12 points, making 4-of-7 field goals and going 4-for-4 from the line.
  • The contest was expected to be a tight affair, and was for the first six minutes. A 17-0 run gave the Fighting Scots a double-digit lead that they would not relinquish. Tied at 6-6 with 14:37 to play in the first half, Edinboro held Charleston scoreless for the next four minutes as five different players contributed to the 17-point run. Mike Beck led the way as he scored all six of his points in the burst on a tradition 3-point play and a 3-pointer from the corner.
  • The Golden Eagles closed the gap to ten points on two occasions, the last at 35-25 with 3:48 remaining, but Edinboro closed the half on an 11-3 run to go up 46-28 at intermission. The Fighting Scots limited UC to 39.1 percent shooting in the first half.
  • With leading scorer Kier Anderson leading the way, the Golden Eagles opened the second half on 11-3 run of their own to once again pull to within ten at 49-39 less than four minutes into the half.
  • Yet another 11-3 run, this one courtesy of the Fighting Scots, boosted the margin back up to 18 points at 60-42, and UC never pulled closer than 14 points the rest of the game. A 24-6 run over the next six minutes gave Edinboro its largest lead of the game at 84-55 with 6:23 remaining.
  • Edinboro shot 50.7 percent from the floor (34-of-67), including 9-of-26 on 3-pointers, and went 16-of-18 at the line. Charleston ended the game at 46.4 percent (26-of-56), making 5-of-16 3-pointers and 16-of-25 free throws. Edinboro ruled the boards, 38-31, and committed just nine turnovers compared to 13 for the Golden Eagles.
  • Anderson, who came in averaging 18.2 ppg., had 15 points for UC, as did Jordan Smith. Shaq Speights was also in double figures with 14 points.
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 67-70, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February. 
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.  
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Charleston(WV): Dwaine Osborne (Clearwater Christian) -- 92-63, 6th year; 186-189 overall, 14th year
  • The 2018-19 season marks the sixth season for Dwaine Osborne at the helm of the University of Charleston men's basketball program. Osborne has over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, with 13 coming as a head coach. Osborne, who was hired August 5, 2013, came to UC after four-year tenures at Texas - Permian Basin and Glenville State.
  • Osborne guided the Golden Eagles to an 18-13 record a year ago, advancing to the Mountain East Conference championship game for the second time in five seasons. The Golden Eagles defeated Shepherd in the MEC quarterfinals and then followed that up with an overtime victory over eighth-ranked West Liberty. UC would fall in the MEC championship game to Wheeling Jesuit.
  • In his five-plus seasons at Charleston, Osborne has led the Golden Eagles to a 92-63 overall record, along with two MEC Championship game appearances. No MEC team has appeared in the title game more times than Charleston during Osborne's tenure.
  • Osborne's first season at Charleston, in 2013-14 resulted in a 21-9 record, as the Golden Eagles advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. They won the inaugural Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship by defeating third-ranked West Liberty, 63-60, in the title game. Osborne was named the MEC Coach of the Year.
  • Before his arrival in Charleston, Osborne spent four seasons as head coach at Texas – Permian Basin. Osborne led UTPB to two winning seasons, two conference tournament appearances (2010-11 and 2011-12), and a regular season conference championship (2011). The program had only had one winning season in its history before his arrival and no championships.
  • Prior to becoming head coach at UTPB, Osborne took over the Glenville State program at the age of 29, becoming the second-youngest NCAA II head coach in the country at the time of his hiring. In 2008-09, the Pioneers posted a 20-9 record overall, giving the program its first 20-win season as an NCAA II member.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro comes in with a 2-1 record. The Fighting Scots  opened the 2018-19 campaign with an 81-63 win over Thiel on November 10, before dropping a 74-60 decision at Lake Erie on November 17. That was followed by an 87-56 win over Penn State Shenango this past Tuesday.
  • The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 43-23 halftime lead against Penn State Shenango and shot 49.2 percent for the game while holding the Lions to 32.8 percent. Edinboro held a 50-34 advantage on the glass. Anthony Coleman (Euclid, Ohio/Willoughby South) led four scorers in double figures with 18 points. DeAnthony Owens (Austin, Tex./St. Stephen's Episcopal) and Trey Staunch (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) added 14 points apiece, while Turner Kurt (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) contributed 12 points.
  • Coleman and Staunch are leading the Fighting Scots in scoring at 14.0 ppg. Coleman, a 6'3": senior, is the only Fighting Scot to score in double figures in all three games. A second team All-PSAC West selection in his first year as a Fighting Scot, Coleman averaged 15.2 ppg. and was one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC. He has made 5-of-16 3-pointers this season. In addition, he is averaging 6.0 rpg.
  • Staunch joined the Fighting Scots in game number two after wrapping up his football career the same day Edinboro was opening the basketball season. The 6'4", 280 lb. senior was named a second team All-PSAC West selection at offensive tackle. He has scored 14 points in each of his first two games, and is shooting 62.5 percent from the floor (10-of-16). He adds 5.0 rpg. Staunch had not played basketball since high school before joining the team last season. 
  • Against Thiel, the Fighting Scots took control of the game midway through the second half. Leading 56-52 with just over 11 minutes remaining, Edinboro outscored the Tomcats 17-4 over the next five minutes to take control of the game. 
  • Sophomore guard Jaryn Simpson (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) led Edinboro with career-highs of 22 points and 6 assists against Thiel. He comes in averaging 12.3 ppg. with a team-high 14 assists.  
  • Owens is one of two transfers expected to make big contributions in 2018-19. A 6'4" junior guard, he iis averaging 12.0 ppg. and has made 6-of-15 3-pointers. Owens, who played at New Mexico JC a year ago, also has a team-high 6 steals. Fellow transfer Daylon Harris (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) played at Western Nebraska CC a year ago. A 6'5" junior forward, he is averaging 7.0 ppg.
  • Kurt, a 6'8" freshman, comes in averaging 8.3 ppg. and 7.7 rpg. while making 5-of-11 3-pointers. Jack Frank (Odessa, Fla./Steinbrenner), a 6'7" senior, is also averaging a team-high 7.7 rpg.  
  • Edinboro ended the 2017-18 season with an 18-11 record. That included a 13-9 record in league contests, as the Fighting Scots finished fourth in the PSAC West after being picked to finish eighth in the coaches' preseason poll.  
  • Edinboro was once again picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll this year.   
Scouting the Golden Eagles 
  • Charleston owns a 3-2 record. The Golden Eagles were picked to finish third in the Mountain East Conference after finishing at 18-13 a year ago and reaching the MEC Championship game. UC opened the year with three straight wins, opening with an 89-75 win over Bowie State, followed by a 100-76 win over Seton Hill. They made it three straight wins with 99-68 triumph at Davis & Elkins before dropping back-to-back road games at Fairmont State (99-96) and Shepherd (101-93).      
  • The Golden Eagles are averaging 95.2 ppg., ranking ninth in Division II in scoring offense. They have scored at least 89 points in every game. UC allows 83.8 ppg. As a team, they are shooting 56.4 percent from the floor, the second-best figure in Division II.
  • UNC Asheville transfer Drew Rackley paces five scorers in double figures at 27.3 ppg. The 6'2" junior is third in Division II in scoring and comes off a 47-point effort against Shepherd. He made 14-of-26 field goals, including 4-of-11 3-pointers, and was 15-of-17 at the line. Rackley has scored at least 17 points in every game, including 29 at Fairmont State. He is shooting 54.3 percent from the floor (44-of-81), with 21-of-43 3-pointers (48.8 percent), and has made 27-of-32 free throws (84.4 pct.). He is 11th in Division II in 3-pointers made per game. 
  • Devon Robinson, a 6'4" junior forward by way of Cuyahoga CC, is next in scoring at 13.6 ppg. and is the top rebounder on the Golden Eagles at 7.0 rpg. He is shooting 66.7 percent from the floor (24-of-36) and 80.0 percent from the line (16-of-20). Adam Traore, a 6'6" senior forward who previously played at Coppin State, adds 13.2 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. while shooting 61.1 percent from the floor (22-of-36). 
  • Seth O'Neal and LaMont McManus round out the Charleston players scoring in double figures at 11.8 and 10.8 ppg., respectively. O'Neal, a 6'0" sophomore, has a team-leading 16 assists with just 5 turnovers. McManus is a 6'6" sophomore who has made 24 of his 31 field goal attempts, a sizzling 77.4 percent.
