The Game Story
  • Edinboro opens up PSAC action this weekend with a pair of road contests. The Fighting Scots debut in conference action on Saturday, December 1 at PSAC East preseason favorite West Chester. On Sunday, December, they play Bloomsburg. Both contests tip off at 3 p.m.
  • The Fighting Scots enter conference play with a 2-2 record after suffering a 79-61 loss at Charleston(WV) last Sunday. Edinboro's final 22 games are against PSAC opponents. They have won both contests at McComb Fieldhouse, opening the season with an 81-63 win over Thiel and handing Penn State Shenago an 87-56 defeat. The Scots are in search of their first road win after losing 74-60 at Lake Erie and 79-61 at Charleston(WV).   
  • Edinboro comes in averaging 72.3 ppg., good for 14th in the PSAC. The Fighting Scots allow 68.0 ppg., which ranks fifth. West Chester is fifth in scoring offense (80.7 ppg.) and eighth in scoring defense (74.0 ppg.). Bloomsburg is 15th in scoring offense (70.0 ppg.) and 17th in scoring defense (91.3 ppg.).
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots would finish 13-9 in PSAC action, good for fourth place. They went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round, followed by an upset of top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. Edinboro would lose to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals.
  • With three starters departing who combined for a total of 1,348 points, Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. After earning second team All-PSAC West accolades a year ago, Anthony Coleman had scored in double figures in each of the first three games before playing just six minutes at Charleston(WV) due to an injury. He is averaging 12.3 ppg. The 6'3" guard emerged as one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC in his first season. He finished third on the team and 24th in the PSAC in scoring at 15.2 ppg., while leading the team in 3-pointers, making 72-of-174 (41.4 pct.). He ranked sixth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage and was tied for seventh in 3-point field goals made per game (2.5).     
  • Edinboro has four players averaging in double digits. Jaryn Simpson leads the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg., while Trey Staunch adds 13.3 ppg. He has played in the last three games after joining the team following the conclusion of the football season. Anthony Coleman adds 12.3 ppg. and DeAnthony Owens is at 11.2 ppg.
  • West Chester enters Saturday game with a 3-3 record following an 85-75 win over Holy Family on Tuesday. Bloomsburg hosts Gannon on Saturday and currently is 2-2 following a 77-72 win over Felician on Wednesday. The Edinboro game will be the fourth in six days for the Huskies.

  • Jaymon Mason reached 30 points for the sixth time in his career, but it wasn't enough to avoid a fifth straight loss after a pair of wins to start the season.
  • Mason paced the Fighting Scots with 30 points, making 7-of-14 field goals including 6-of-9 3-pointers, and going a perfect 10-for-10 at the line. He added 7 rebounds and 7 assists, along with a pair of steals.
  • West Chester's Malik Jackson, who came in as the PSAC's scoring leader, also finished with 30 points. He made 9-of-19 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers, along with 7-of-8 at the line.
  • After falling behind by 12 points early in the game at 22-10, Edinboro used a 16-2 run to take a 26-25 lead with 4:19 left in the first half on a pair of Mason free throws. The Golden Rams would eventually take a 35-31 lead at the half, thanks in large part to a 22-4 advantage in scoring in the paint.
  • A Mason three started the second half, with Jackson Hyland answering with a jumper for WCU. Mikael Anderson's jumper gave Edinboro its biggest lead of the game at 39-37 with 18:41 left to play.
  • Unfortunately, West Chester responded with a 19-2 run over the next seven minutes as Edinboro turned the ball over six times and missed all four of its shots during that stretch. That gave the Golden Rams a 56-41 lead.  The run eventually grew to 28-6 as WCU took a 65-45 lead with 9:22 to play.
  • The Fighting Scots would make one run at the Golden Rams, scoring nine straight points to close the gap to 72-61 with 4:32 remaining. Mason started the run with a three, with Anderson scoring the next six points on a free throw, a layup, and a 3-pointer. West Chester halted the run with the next six markers, however.
  • Anderson was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures, as the senior forward posted his first career double-double with 18 points and a career-best 12 rebounds.
  • In addition to Jackson, West Chester had three more players in double digits. Hyland finished with 16 points, Matt Penecale had 15, and Thomas White 10.
  • Turnovers hurt the Fighting Scots all afternoon. Edinboro committed 24 turnovers that West Chester used for a 34-9 advantage in points off turnovers. WCU had 14 miscues. Edinboro would end the day shooting 41.7 percent from the floor (20-of-48), and was 12-of-24 on 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots also made 18-of-26 free throws. West Chester shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64) and made 16-of-21 free throws. Edinboro held a 36-32 lead on the glass, but it was West Chester outscoring the Scots in the paint, 36-10.

  • Jaymon Mason turned in a stellar effort with 34 points and 8 assists, but the Fighting Scots suffered a 97-84 loss at Bloomsburg. The contest was tied at 38-38 at the half, but the Huskies shot 61.8 percent from the floor (21-of-34) in the second half, including 6-for-9 from 3-point range, for 59 points.
  • The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring ten ties and 13 lead changes. Mason provided the bulk of Edinboro's scoring with 20 first-half points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and making three of the Fighting Scots' four 3-pointers. Both teams shot an identical 4-for-12 from 3-point range, with Edinboro shooting 46.9 percent from the floor (15-for-32) and the Huskies shooting 41.0 percent (16-for-39).
  • Sheldon Brogdon opened the second half with a 3-pointer that gave Edinboro a 41-38 lead with 19:37 left to play. It would be their last lead of the game, however, as Bloomsburg countered with a 27-12 run. Trailing 65-53, the Fighting Scots interrupted the run with a 10-2 run of their own, featuring back-to-back 3-pointers by Mason and Mike Beck, and another triple from Mikael Anderson. That cut the Huskies' lead to four at 67-63 with 9:29 remaining.
  • Edinboro trimmed the lead to four on three other occasions, but that would be as close as they would get. The last instance was a Brogdon jumper that made the score 73-69 with 7:35 left to play. The Huskies then used a 16-6 run to increase the gap to 14 points at 89-75 with 2:14 on the clock.
  • The Fighting Scots shot 45.5 percent from the floor (30-of-66), making 11-of-30 from behind the arc. The Huskies finished at 50.7 percent (37-of-73) and 10-of-21 on 3-pointers. Bloomsburg's bench outscored Edinboro's, 42-10, and the Huskies led in rebounds, 40-31, on their way to a 21-11 lead in second-chance points.
  • Mason was 11-of-24 from the floor and made 4-of-11 3-pointers. He also shot 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • Anderson and Brogdon finished with 13 points apiece, while Beck added 10 points. Maceo Baston grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
  • Christian Mortellite led Bloomsburg with 27 points, making 5-of-11 3-pointers, while Kyle-Michael Rose scored 22 markers in 25 minutes off the bench, shooting 10-for-16 from the field. Carnell McGirt tallied a double-double off the bench with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Yahmir Greenlee added 14 points.
     
Head Coach Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 67-71, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February. 
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.  
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro comes in with a 2-2 record. The Fighting Scots  opened the 2018-19 campaign with an 81-63 win over Thiel on November 10, before dropping a 74-60 decision at Lake Erie on November 17. That was followed by an 87-56 win over Penn State Shenango on November 20. Last Sunday, Edinboro suffered a 79-61 loss at Charleston(WV)..
  • Jaryn Simpson is leading Edinboro in scoring at 14.3 ppg. The sophomore guard has scored 20-or-more points in a pair of contests, with a career-high 22 points vs. Thiel and 20 vs. Charleston. He also leads the team with 14 assists. He has made 8-of-26 3-pointers. 
  • Anthony Coleman was the only Fighting Scot to reach double digits in the first three games, and was well on his way to a fourth at Charleston. The 6'3" senior scored Edinboro's first seven points, but he would would go out with an injury and not return. Coleman is averaging 12.3 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. He was a second team All-PSAC West selection in his first year as a Fighting Scot, Coleman averaged 15.2 ppg. and was one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC. 
  • Trey Staunch joined the Fighting Scots in game number two after wrapping up his football career the same day Edinboro was opening the basketball season. The 6'4", 280 lb. senior was named a second team All-PSAC West selection at offensive tackle. He scored 14 points in each of his first two games, and added 12 at Charleston. He is shooting 61.5 percent from the floor (16-of-26). He adds 4.7 rpg. Staunch had not played basketball since high school before joining the team last season. 
  • DeAnthony Owens is one of two transfers expected to make big contributions in 2018-19. A 6'4" junior guard, he is averaging 11.0 ppg. and has made 8-of-20 3-pointers. Owens, who played at New Mexico JC a year ago, also has a team-high 7 steals. Fellow transfer Daylon Harris played at Western Nebraska CC a year ago. A 6'5" junior forward, he is averaging 6.3 ppg.
  • Turner Kurt, a 6'8" freshman from nearby Cambridge Springs High School, comes in averaging 6.8 ppg. and 6.5 rpg. while making 5-of-11 3-pointers. Jack Frank(Odessa, Fla./Steinbrenner), a 6'7" senior, isaveraging a team-high 5.8 rpg.  
  • Edinboro ended the 2017-18 season with an 18-11 record. That included a 13-9 record in league contests, as the Fighting Scots finished fourth in the PSAC West after being picked to finish eighth in the coaches' preseason poll.  
  • Edinboro was once again picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll this year.   
Scouting the Golden Rams
  • Following an 85-75 win at Holy Family on Tuesday night, West Chester comes in with a 3-3 record. The Golden Rams opened the season with a pair of losses in the MEC/PSAC Challenge, including a 94-80 loss at nationally-ranked West Liberty, but have since run off wins in three of their last four contests.
  • West Chester was picked to finish first in the PSAC East after finishing at 22-7 a year ago. The Golden Rams qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the seventh straight year and were selected for the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last five years.
  • Former WCU standout Damien Blair is in his 11th season as the head coach at his alma mater. He owns a 189-97 career record. Blair has guided West Chester to four 20-win seasons in the last six years, including a 22-7 finish a year ago. As a player, he was a two-time PSAC East Player of the Year in 1994 and 1995. He was a four-time all-league selection, receiving three first-team nods. His 2,025 career points stand second all-time at West Chester and in the top 15 all-time in PSAC history.
  • West Chester returned four starters from last year's team that finished 22-7 and won a game in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. Three of those starters earned PSAC East laurels. Matt Penecale and Jackson Hyland were All-PSAC East second team selections, while Frank Rokins was the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year.
  • In 2016-17, Malik Jackson was a second team All-PSAC East pick after ranking fifth in the PSAC at 19.2 ppg.  That is the highest scoring average by a WCU player since 2002-03.
  • Hyland leads the team in scoring at 19.3 ppg., adding 6.3 rpg. The 6'5" senior forward is shooting 56.3 percent from the floor (40-of-71) and has made 30-of-38 free throws. Jackson, a 6'2" junior guard, is next at 15.3 ppg. He is the team's top 3-point threat, making 20-of-53.
    Rokins is a 6'4", 215 lb. junior guard who joined WCU last year after playing at Essex County CC. He is averaging 10.3 ppg. and a team-leading 9.0 rpg. In addition, he has team-high 22 assists and 17 steals.
  • Penecale, a 6'4" senior guard, has missed two games this year before returning against Holy Family. He is 56 assists away from breaking WCU's career assists record..    
Scouting the Huskies
  • Bloomsburg currently has a 2-2 after defeating Felician on Wednesday, 77-72. The night before that, the Huskies suffered a 113-59 loss at St. Francis(Pa.). With a game against Gannon on Saturday, the Huskies will be playing their fourth game in six days when they face the Fighting Scots.
  • Bloomsburg finished with a 15-12 record a year ago and was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC East in the coaches' preseason poll. The Huskies have made the PSAC Tournament in each of the last three seasons and in six of the last seven years. Head coach John Sanow is in his 13th season as the head coach of the Huskies and has guided the team to a 150-177 overall record. He ranks second in Bloomsburg's all-time career coaching victories list, trailing only Charlie Chronister who won 559 games from 1971-2002. A 1987 graduate of Indiana (Pa.), he led IUP in scoring and was a first team All-PSAC selection in 1986. Sanow served as an assistant coach at Gannon, Pitt-Johnstown, Vermont and St. Francis(Pa.).
  • The Huskies entered the 2018-19 campaign minus all-time leading scorer Christian Mortellite, who finished with 2,037 career points. He is also the program's all-time leader in career 3-pointers made with 314.
  • Bloomsburg returned two starters from last year – junior Ky Mauras and redshirt junior Sam Saxton. Mauras recorded what is believed to be the program's first-ever triple-double last season with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists in a win over Lock Haven. The 6'1" guard is off to a fast start, averaging 23.3 ppg. and 5.7 rpg. while shooting 51.0 percent from the floor (26-of-51). Mauras has reached the 20-point mark in three of four games. Saxton is 6'3" guard who previously played at LeMoyne. He is averaging 8.8 ppg. and 6.0 rpg.
  • Travis Elmore and Nicholas King are also in double digits t 13.0 ppg. and 10.5 ppg., respectively. Elmore is a 6'6" freshman who adds 6.3 rpg. and is shooting 54.8 percent from the floor (23-of-42). King is a 6'4" sophomore guard. Junior Austin Harriott, another 6'4" guard, is averaging a team-high 6.5 rpg.
