The All-Time Series

Edinboro leads 5-4
In a series which began in 1988, Kutztown snapped a four-game losing streak to Edinboro with a 47-21 win at Sox Harrison Stadium in 2013, and followed that up with a 41-10 victory in 2013.  This marks the first meeting between the two teams since then.

The Last Meeting
Kutztown 41, Edinboro 10
Kutztown broke open a close game with 24 straight points to hand Edinboro a season-ending loss. Kutztown would end the day with 469 total yards, featuring a balanced attack that accounted for 251 yards through the air and 218 yards on the ground. The Fighting Scots' offense  totaled 274 yards. That included 92 yards rushing. Kutztown took the opening kickoff and scored on an eight-yard pass from Josh Luckenbaugh to Kodi Reed. The Golden Bears would go ahead 14-0 early in the second quarter followed an Edinboro fumble, with Anthony Kelly catching a 40-yard TD pass from Luckenbaugh. The Fighting Scots would get on the scoreboard with 7:14 remaining in the second quarter thanks to a bad punt. Darren Massey scored on a sweep around right end from 15 yards out. With Kutztown leading 14-7 at the half, the two teams would trade field goals in the third period. Nathan Fehr converted on a 41-yard field goal to give Kutztown a 17-7 lead, but Edinboro answered with a 30-yard field goal by T.J. Hardy. Unfortunately, it was all Kutztown after that, as the Golden Bears scored the final 24 points while holding Edinboro to just two first downs the rest of the way. Kutztown extended its lead to 24-10 with just two seconds remaining in the third quarter on Curtis Wortham's 10-yard TD run. Less than two minutes later, the Golden Bears took advantage of another interception for a 7-yard TD pass from Luckenbaugh to Reed. Kutztown would tack on two more scores in the fourth quarter. Fehr booted a 26-yard field goal and Wortham scored on a 39-yard run. Jon Girvin would complete just 12 of 32 passes for 182 yards with two interceptions. Ben Eisel caught five passes for 112 yards. Luckenbaugh completed 26 of 34 passes for 251 yards with 3 TDs. Reed caught seven passes for 99 yards, while Kelly added six grabs for 87 yards. Wortham finished with 132 yards on 20 carries with 2 TDs.

Last Week
#22 Indiana(Pa.) 13, Edinboro 6
For the second week in a row, the Fighting Scots played in less than ideal weather conditions. And for the second week in a row, the defense and Walter Fletcher came up big. Unfortunately, this time it didn't translate into a victory as 22nd-ranked IUP was able to put together a scoring drive while Edinboro came up eight yards short of matching in the final minute. IUP took a 6-0 lead on a pair Dillon Sarka field goals (39 and 43 yards) in the second quarter. Edinboro would knot the score at 6-6 midway through the third quarter when Walter Fletcher scored his 16th touchdown on a one-yard run. That capped an eight-play, 38-yard drive. Jake Monroe's extra point hit the left upright, ending a streak of 33 consecutive successful PATs. The Crimson Hawks grabbed the lead on a one-yard TD run by Justice Evans, culminating a 10-play, 78-yard march to take a 13-7 lead. With just over three minutes remaining Edinboro took over at its own 38 yard line. A pair of Walter Fletcher runs picked up one first down, and a Jarrod Kellar-to-James Clark pass for 13 yards on 3rd-and-9 accounted for another. Facing a 4th-and-13 at the IUP 37, Kellar found A.J. Miller for 25 yards to the 12 with under a minute to play. After an incomplete pass, Fletcher gained four to the IUP 8. After another incompletion, Kellar's pass was tipped and ended up being intercepted at the fourwith 17 seconds left. Fletcher registered another huge game with a career-high 36 carries for 186 yards. Kellar completed 8-of-22 passes for 118 yards with 3 INTs, all tipped balls. Clark caught 6 passes for 83 yards. Edinboro would outgain the Crimson Hawks, 287 yards to 257.

Kutztown 62, Millersville 10
The 23rd-ranked G0lden Bears had little trouble improving to 8-1 against out-matched Millersville. The Marauders actually led 10-7 after one quarter, but Kutztown exploded for 27 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third while scoring the 55 points of the game. Eight different players scored touchdowns, with Craig Reynolds accounting for two on runs of 6 and 8 yards. Backup quarterback Eric Nickel accounted for 323 yards and 5 TDs, passing for 182 yards and 4 TDs and rushing for 141 yards and a TD on 17 rushes. Kutztown finished with 471 yards while holding Millersville to just 277 yards, including just 56 rushing. The Golden Bears forced four turnovers, returning an interception and a fumble for a touchdown.

The Coaches
Wayne Bradford (Salisbury St. '90) was named Edinboro's 15th head coach on March 29, 2017 and led Edinboro to a 7-4 record in his first season. After serving as interim head coach in 2017, that tag was removed after less than a week after the conclusion of the season. With his tenth win as head coach coming last week against East Stroudsburg, Bradford is the fastest coach to reach 10 wins at Edinboro. Bradford has worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots' defensive coordinator. Bradford has master-minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. A year ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro's teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9-4 and reached the Super Region One semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 121 wins.

Jim Clements (Widener '96) is in his fifth season as the head coach at Kutztown and has a 36-17 record.  He has had winning seasons in each of his five seasons as head coach. A year ago, he led the Golden Bears to an 8-3 record, and in 2016, Kutztown reached the PSAC Championship game against California(Pa.) after winning the PSAC East title with a 7-0 record. Kutztown would finish at 7-4 overall. Clements came to Kutztown after serving as the head coach at Delaware Valley for eight years. He is the winningest coach in Delaware Valley history with a record of 66-24 from 2006-13, including a perfect 10-0 regular season in 2011. His teams won four Middle Atlantic Conference championships and reached the NCAA Division III Championships second round three times. He was a three-time MAC Coach of the Year (2009-11).

The Game Stories
  • Edinboro concludes the 2018 campaign facing a nationally-ranked team for the second week in a row. After suffering a 13-6 loss to 22nd-ranked Indiana(Pa.) last Saturday, the Fighting Scots now face 21st-ranked Kutztown. The Golden
Bears come into the game ranked sixth in the Super Region One poll, and are in need of a win to remain in contention for an NCAA Division II Playoff berth. The Fighting Scots are 6-4 overall and finished at 3-4 in the PSAC West. Kutztown owns an 8-1 record and finished second in the PSAC East at 5-1.
  • It's Senior Day at Edinboro. A total of 17 seniors will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies. The group endured an 0-11 campaign to start their careers, but have since helped the Fighting Scots to a 22-10 record over the last three years, including a 9-2 record in 2016, the biggest turnaround in Division II history. They include: David Ballew III (DE); Torrey Benning (SS); James Clark (WR); Derek Dorr (DT); Kyle Galyk (RB); Anthony Gates (LB); Trey Hall (LB); Zuril Hendrick (CB); A.J. Hulton (LB); Alex Molik (OL); Nick Pettigrew (NG); Blake Reddick (WR); Brandan Rivers (LB); Josh Schmidt (LS); Lindel Service Jr. (FS); Trey Staunch (OT); and Ethan Upperco (DE).
  • Edinboro saw its two-game winning streak snapped last Saturday, suffering a 13-6 loss to 22nd-ranked Indiana(Pa.). The Crimson Hawks scored the winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, then stopped Edinboro at the IUP 8 in the final half minute. The loss dropped Edinboro to 3-1 at Sox Harrison Stadium.
  • The Fighting Scots opened the season with a dominating 69-0 win at Lake Erie, followed by a hard-fought 21-16 triumph at Bloomsburg. Edinboro claimed its home opener with an impressive 49-24 win over East Stroudsburg, before heading back on the road to begin PSAC West action. Edinboro would rally to take the lead before California(Pa.) scored late for a 40-35 win. The Scots celebrated Homecoming with a come-from-behind 31-24 win over Gannon on September 29. They were unable to complete the sweep of local rivals as October began, however, suffering a 24-6 loss at Mercyhurst.  That was followed by another road loss, 49-28 at Slippery Rock, before snapping the two-game skid with a 56-12 victory over Seton Hill. The Scots made it two wins in a row with a 14-7 victory at Clarion two weeks ago.
  • Edinboro's defense has stepped up in recent weeks, limiting the last three opponents to under 300 total yards each game. The Fighting Scots come in ranked fifth in the PSAC in total defense at 335.2 ypg. They rank first in the conference and second in Division II in turnovers gained (29), and are first and third, respectively, in interceptions (17). They will have to slow down a Kutztown offense that ranks third in the PSAC and 17th nationally in scoring offense (39.9 ppg.), along with second and 16th, respectively, in total offense (475.1 ypg.). In addition, Kutztown averages 292.0 ypg. passing, which is second in the PSAC and 14th in Division II.
  • Kutztown opened the season with seven straight wins. That included a 32-28 win at then 17th-ranked Assumption, plus a 34-31 win over California(Pa.). The Golden Bears suffered their lone loss, 38-21, to a West Chester team, that has climbed to ninth in the latest AFCA Division II Top 25. That is the only time KU has not scored at least 32 points in a game.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish fourth in the Western Division in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll for the second straight year. Edinboro finished fourth in the Western Division last year.  Kutztown was picked to finish third in the PSAC East preseason poll after finishing 8-3 a year ago.
  • Edinboro has four of the top active career performers in Division II. Running back Walter Fletcher ranks among the active leaders in scoring and rushing, wide receiver James Clark is in the career receptions leaders, while fellow wideout Ta'Nauz Gregory is in the kickoff return leaders. Finally, cornerback Zuril Hendrick is the career leader in interceptions.
  • Edinboro was ranked in a pair of preseason publications. The Fighting Scots were 18th in Lindy's Sports College Football National 2018 Preview, and 24th in the Street & Smith's College Football Magazine Preseason Top 25. Edinboro was among "others receiving votes" in the AFCA Division II Top 25 earlier in the year.
  • A trio of Edinboro players earned All-American honors a year ago. Walter Fletcher was a consensus All-American, including second team Associated Press Division II All-America honors, after ranking second in Division II in rushing. Zuril Hendrick and James Clark were named to the Don Hansen All-America Team, with Hendrick named to the first team after leading Division II in interceptions, and Clark a third team choice after ranking third in Division II in receptions per game.
