Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro comes in with a 4-5 record and returns to the court for the first time since wrapping up the 2018 portion of their schedule on December 19 with an 86-81 loss to Lock Haven. The Fighting Scots are were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll and come in with a 1-3 record in PSAC play. They finished fourth in the PSAC West a year ago with an 18-11 record.
  • The Fighting Scots have played the last five games without Anthony Coleman. A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago in his first season at Edinboro, Coleman averaged 15.2 ppg. and was one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC. He scored in double digits in the first three games, and was well on his way to a fourth at Charleston. The 6'3" senior scored Edinboro's first seven points, but he would would go out with an injury and not return. Coleman has not played since and is expected to miss an extended period with the injury.
  • Jaryn Simpson has emerged as Edinboro's leading scorer at 17.7 ppg., good for tenth in the PSAC. The sophomore guard scored in double figures in eight of nine games, with four games of 20-or-more points. That includes a career-best 34-point effort at Bloomsburg, making 10-of-18 field goals, including 5-of-9 3-pointers, and 9-of-10 free throws.. • Simpson is one of two sophomores playing a huge role. Alex Jay has replaced Coleman in the starting lineup, and while not providing a great deal of scoring (5.7 ppg.), the 6'3" guard set a career-high for rebounds in each of his first three starts and has led the team in rebounding in four of five games. He is averaging a team-high 6.8 rpg.
  • DeAnthony Owens stands second on the team in scoring at 13.8 ppg. A 6'4" junior guard who previously played at New Mexico JC, Owens has scored in double figures in the last four games, averaging 17.7 ppg. while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor over that stretch.  He has made 20-of-51 3-pointers and has a team-high 13 steals.

The 6'4", 280 lb. senior was named a second team All-PSAC West selection at offensive tackle. He provides the Fighting Scots with plenty of inside muscle. Staunch has scored in double figures in six of his eight games, and comes in at 12.6 ppg. off the bench. He adds 5.3 rpg. and is shooting 61.5 percent from the floor (40-of-65), bolstered by a 10-for-10 showing against Mansfield. Staunch had not played basketball since high school before joining the team last season.
Scouting the Vulcans
  • California(Pa.) comes into the contest with a 3-7 record while facing a demanding schedule that has featured some of the top teams in the region, including Fairmont State, Notre Dame(Oh.), West Chester, Concord, and East Stroudsburg. The Vulcans are 1-3 in PSAC action. Like Edinboro, that win came against Bloomsburg.
  • Head coach Danny Sancomb is in his first season at Cal after a highly-successful run at Wheeling Jesuit. Sancomb served as the Cardinals' head coach for 11 seasons, posting a 216-115 record. He guided Wheeling Jesuit to 100 wins over the last four seasons thanks to four consecutive 20-win seasons. A year ago, he guided the Cardinals to the Mountain East Conference championship, a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, and a 26-6 record. The year before, WJU made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and finished the year at 25-8. In the 2015-16 season, Sancomb led Wheeling Jesuit to a school-record 28 wins and the Cardinals were ranked No. 1 in the NABC national rankings for the first time in program history. Sancomb was named both the NABC Atlantic Region and MEC Coach of the Year.
  • Cal was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC West after ending 2017-18 with an 11-17 record. The Vulcans featured five returning players, including senior Cordell Smith (11.3 ppg. in '17-18), along with nine newcomers – five of those transfers.

  • Collin MacAdams, a 6'5" freshman, comes off a 29-point effort against East Stroudsburg and was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Week for his effort. He is averaging 13.3 ppg. along with 6.9 rpg.
  • Two more freshmen -- Zyan Collins and Jermaine Hall Jr. -- have also started all ten games. Collins, a 6'3" guard, comes in at 12.8 rpg. and 5.2 rpg. Hall is a 6'4" swingman who scores at a 12.7 ppg. clip and leads the team in rebounding at 8.4 per game.
