INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA tonight released its brackets for the men's tennis regional tournaments. Edinboro, runner-up in the PSAC, earned the fifth seed for the Atlantic Region I Tournament, hosted by top-seeded Bluefield State. The Fighting Scots will face fourth-seed Fairmont State in the semifinals on Monday, April 30 at 11 a.m. The winner will play the Big Blues in the finals on Tuesday, May 1 at 11 a.m. The champion will move on to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Surprise, Ariz. on May 8-12.
The Fighting Scots, who are 10-9 and ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll, will compete in their fifth straight NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament after appearing in their sixth consecutive PSAC Championship over the weekend. Edinboro defeated Kutztown, 5-1, in the semifinals on Friday, but dropped a hard-fought finals match to Mercyhurst on Saturday by a 5-1 decision.
Edinboro has won three of the past five PSAC league titles, and enjoyed a stretch where they had won 28 straight matches against PSAC opponents, including the postseason.
The Fighting Falcons were ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll and own a 13-10 record.
Senior
Vitor Albanese, who is ranked first in the region by the ITA, holds the top record as the team's number-one singles player. The Brazil native finished the fall winning both the PSAC and Oracle/ITA Atlantic Region singles titles, capturing his third-straight league singles crown. He is the only player in PSAC history to win three straight conference singles titles. He topped 100 career singles wins this season and is currently 23-8 on the season.
Albanese has also split time with
Daniel Fernandez and
Mateus Santos as Edinboro's number-one doubles team, with him and Fernandez finishing as champions at the ITA Atlantic Region and PSAC Championships in the fall. Fernandez and Albanese have been paired up for most of the season, capturing a 16-3 record.
Junior
Kevin Mboko is second on the team with an 14-7 record at number-five singles. He is followed by Fernandez, who played at number two singles this season, with a 12-11 singles record.
The Fighting Scots have five different players with more than 10 wins in doubles, led by Albanese's 24. Fernandez is right behind him with 23 and
Mauricio Santos is third with 16. Mboko's 16 and
Mateus Santos' 11 round out the five.
