BLUEFIELD, WVa. -- Making their fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament, the Edinboro men's tennis team could not overcome a 2-1 deficit in doubles, as they fell in the semifinals, 5-3, to Fairmont State. The Fighting Falcons were making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Playing in their final match, seniors
Vitor Albanese and
Daniel Fernandez, ranked #23 in the latest NCAA national poll, picked up an 8-6 win over Lucas Alves and Guilherme Pachane to get the Fighting Scots on the board. However, Fairmont St. would come back and take the 2-1 heading into singles with wins at number two and three doubles. It was a close match at three doubles with
Mauricio Santos and
Kevin Mboko falling, 8-6.
Albanese made quick work of Alves at the top singles spot, 6-2, 6-1 to pull Edinboro even at 2-2. The Fighting Falcons took the lead once again with a win at number three singles before the Fighting Scots got a win from
Mauricio Santos at number four singles, 6-3, 6-3, to make it a best of three matches remaining.
Fairmont State used two close matches at five and six singles to earn the win, 5-3, despite Fernandez being ahead 6-2, 4-6, 5-4 at number two. That match was unfinished with the match decided.
Edinboro concluded their season at 10-10 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC under interim head coach
Kody Duncan.
