The Game Story
  • Something will have to give on Wednesday when Edinboro plays at Clarion. The Fighting Scots come in riding a seven-game winning streak, the longest of head coach Pat Cleary's tenure, after a loss at fifth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) on Monday. Clarion suffered its third straight loss on Monday, 66-48 at Gannon.  Edinboro is playing its second straight game on the road, and fifth in the last six games.
  • Edinboro comes in with a 4-11 record and is 1-9 in PSAC action. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West. Clarion was picked to come in ninth in the Western Division, and is 4-10 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC West.
  • Wednesday's contest will be played at Clarion's Student Recreation Center, as renovations continue on Tippin Gymnasium.
  • Edinboro suffered large graduation losses, and has been forced to play without second team All-PSAC West performer Anthony Coleman the last 11 games due to an injury. The Fighting Scots have also been without second-leading scorer DeAnthony Owens the last five games, and Steven Freeman, who has been filling in at guard, sat out the last two contests with an injury.
  • Edinboro comes in averaging 71.3 ppg., ranking 14th in the PSAC, while allowing 82.8 ppg., good for 16th in the PSAC. Clarion is 15th in the PSAC in scoring offense (69.2 ppg.) and ranks 11th in scoring defense (77.6 ppg.).
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots would finish 13-9 in PSAC action, good for fourth place. They went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round, followed by an upset of top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. • Keshawn Liggins and Jaymon Mason scored 22 points apiece as Edinboro used a big second half to rally for an 86-78 win at Clarion. The victory clinched a home game in the PSAC Tournament.
  • The possibility of hosting a home game was the furthest thing from head coach Pat Cleary's mind over the first 20 minutes, as Clarion jumped out to a 42-35 lead at the half on Senior Day.
  • Edinboro jumped out to an early 8-5 lead, but a 16-2 run by the Golden Eagles put the Scots in a 21-10 hole. Cameron Grumley accounted for 13 of the 16 points.
  • Clarion boosted the lead to 50-39 with just under 17 minutes to play. An 11-3 run pulled the Fighting Scots to within 53-50 with 12:57 to play when Anthony Coleman drained a 3-pointer.
  • Edinboro finally grabbed the lead at 60-58 with 9:26 to play on a 3-pointer from Mason. Grumley's jumper knotted the score at 60-60, but Edinboro took the lead for good on a 3-point play by Trey Staunch. That made it 63-60 with 8:35 remaining.
  • The Fighting Scots would eventually boost the lead to 11 points at 76-65 with 2:47 left when Mason drilled another three. Edinboro then made 8-of-12 free throws over the last two minutes to hold off the Golden Eagles.
  • Liggins registered his 14th double double as the senior forward finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Mason battled foul trouble in the first half, sitting the final seven minutes of the half and scoring seven points. He would add 15 points in the second half to finish with 22. He made 3-of-5 3-pointers and 9-of-10 free throws.
  • Coleman just missed his second double double against Clarion this year. The junior guard scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Like Mason, he had three 3-pointers. Coleman had 24 points and 10 boards in the first meeting with Clarion.
  • After going scoreless in the first half, Staunch scored nine points in the second half, making 7-of-7 free throws.
  • Grumley paced Clarion with 29 points, adding six rebounds. Brandon Williams scored 16 points and Maqi Watson had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Edinboro shot 42.4 percent from the floor (25-of-59), making 9-of-21 3-pointers, and went 27-for-36 at the line. Clarion would finish at 44.6 percent (29-of-65) after a hot start, The Golden Eagles were 7-of-20 from beyond the arc and 13-of-20 at the line.  After trailing on the glass at the half, Edinboro finished with a 41-35 rebounding advantage. Clarion committed 13 turnovers and Edinboro turned it over 12 times.
Head Coach Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 69-80, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • A depleted Edinboro squad has now lost seven straight games after losing at fifth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) on Monday. Head coach Pat Cleary has had to resort to a young and inexperienced squad since early in the year when All-PSAC West guard Anthony Coleman went down with an injury. For the most part, the Fighting Scots have been highly competitive, but unfortunately, that has not translated into a win of late. It has hastened the development of young players such as sophomores Jaryn Simpson and Alex Jay and freshman Turner Kurt. The Fighting Scots come into the Clarion game with a 4-11 overall record and 1-9 in the PSAC West. They were picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason after finishing fourth in the division with an 18-11 record a year ago.
  • The Fighting Scots have now played 11 games without Anthony Coleman, and the last five without second-leading scorer DeAnthony Owens (13.1 ppg.). Starting forward Daylon Harris missed some time due to a death in the family, as well, whikle Steven Freeman had stepped in at guard and started three games before going down with an injury in practice. He has missed the last two contests.
  • A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago in his first season at Edinboro, Coleman averaged 15.2 ppg. and was one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC. He scored in double digits in the first three games, and was well on his way to a fourth at Charleston. The 6'3" senior scored Edinboro's first seven points, but he would go out with an injury and not return. Coleman has not played since and is expected to miss an extended period with the injury.
  • As a freshman, Jaryn Simpson averaged 3.4 ppg. The sophomore guard from nearby Cathedral Prep has emerged as one of the top scorers in the PSAC in his sophomore season. He ranks seventh in the conference in scoring (18.3 ppg.), along with second in free throw percentage (89.0 pct.), fifth in assists per game (4.5), and sixth in 3-pointers made per game (2.9). Simpson has had a pair of 30-point games this season, with a career-high 34 points vs. Bloomsburg and 33 vs. Pitt-Johnstown. He has scored 20-or-more points in seven contests while scoring in double digits in 13 of 15 games. He leads the team with 68 assists, has made a team-high 44 3-pointers in 126 attempts, and is even averaging 5.5 rpg., third on the team.
  • Trey Staunch continues to give up many inches in the post yet find ways to score. The 6'4", 280 lb. offensive tackle-turned-forward has scored in double figures in 13 of his 14 games since the football season concluded, and led Edinboro with 17 points at IUP. That boosted his average to 13.6 ppg., and he leads the team in rebounding at 6.1 rpg. He recently posted his second career double double against Gannon with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He is shooting 55.6 percent from the floor (4th in the PSAC). Staunch was a second team All-PSAC West as an offensive tackle this year. He had not played basketball since high school before joining the team last season.
  • Turner Kurt, a 6'8" freshman, has started the last five games. He is averaging 7.9 ppg. and 4.9 rpg., with a season-high of 18 points at Pitt-Johnstown. Kurt has made 19-of-56 3-pointers
  • Daylon Harris is averaging 7.1 ppg. while starting 12 games at forward. A 6'5" junior, Harris joined the Fighting Scots this season after previously playing at Western Nebraska CC.
Scouting the Golden Eagles
  • Like Edinboro, Clarion's game at Gannon was delayed two days due to the weather. The Golden Eagles fell to the Golden Knights, 66-48, on Monday. That leaves Clarion with a three-game losing streak as they are now 4-10 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC West.
  • Marcess Williams is in his fifth season as the head coach at Clarion, and has a 38-88 record. In his second season in 2015-16, he led Clarion to the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2009-10 and posted a PSAC first round win over Edinboro. Williams previously served nine years as the head coach at Penn State-Beaver. The Lions won three straight PSUAC Championships (2009-11) and six straight PSAC West titles (2009-14) under Williams.
  • Clarion has four players averaging in double figures in scoring, with a fifth falling just shy. Elijah Cottrill is the lone Golden Eagle to start all 14 games while averaging a team-high 14.0 ppg. A 6'2" junior who previously played at Polk State CC, Cottrill is shooting 51.0 percent from the floor (77-of-151) and has made 15-of-39 3-pointers. He is second on the team in assists (40) and has a team-high 26 steals.
  • Khari Williams, one of two returning starters from last year, is second on the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg. A 6'4" sophomore guard, Williams is second on the team in rebounding (5.9 rpg.) and has a team-high 24 3-pointers in 54 attempts. Clarion has made just 65 3-pointers as a team in 14 games.
  • Stevan Rodriguez, a 6'5" junior guard, and Lawrence Lemon, a 6'7" junior forward, are also in double digits at 12.1 and 10.7 ppg., respectively. Rodriguez is averaging a team-high 7.7 rpg., with Lemon adding 5.6 boards.
Next for the Fighting Scots
  • After playing five of the last six games on the road, Edinboro begins a string of three straight games at home. The Fighting Scots host Slippery Rock on Saturday, January 26. The contest tips off at 3:00 p.m.
