MATCH STORYLINES
- The Edinboro wrestling team returns home for their final three duals of the season, beginning with a visit from #23 Lock Haven on Thursday, January 31. The Fighting Scots is coming off a tight 20-19 loss at George Mason where the match came down to the final dual. The Bald Eagles have won their past two duals including an upset of #12 Arizona State, 23-14. The match between Edinboro and Lock Haven is slated for 7:00 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
- First-year head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, faces a rebuilding year after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill does have two starters back, Fritz Hoehn at 165 lbs. and Zach Ancewicz at 184 lbs., along with Jon Spaulding, who filled in at heavyweight in several matches last year.
- The NCAA released its first set of four coaches' rankings for the 2018-19 wrestling season, ranking 33 wrestlers in each weight class. Edinboro has three wrestlers currently in the rankings. Jacob Oliver is the top ranked Fighting Scot. The redshirt freshman is ranked 27th at 174 lbs. Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.), a redshirt junior, and Jon Spaulding (285 lbs.), a sophomore, are both ranked 29th in their respective weight classes. Reynolds leads Edinboro in total wins with a 24-9 record while Oliver has the highest winning percentage at .846 (22-4 overall record). Spaulding (16-11) and the rest of the trio of Fighting Scots have won their past four dual matches including two major decisions and a technical fall.
- On Sunday, the Fighting Scots went back and forth with George Mason taking a late lead before falling to the Patriots 20-19. George Mason did not send out a wrestler at 133 lbs. giving Richie Gomez a forfeit win. With the Patriots leading 16-6, Edinboro rallied off four straight wins from Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.), Jacob Oliver (174 lbs.), Zach Ancewicz (184 lbs.), and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.). The win by Reynolds gave Edinboro a 19-16 leading going in the last dual. A major decision by #16 Matt Voss gave the Patriots the four point bonus point win to win their first EWL dual in two years.
- Jacob Oliver (174 lbs.) has improved to 23-4 on the season after his win last weekend. This season as a redshirt freshman, Oliver has eight major decisions and four technical falls. He won the PSAC championship, Michigan State Open (fresh./soph.) and the Journeyman Northeast Open (174C) titles at 174 lbs. this season. He has also finished second at the Navy Classic.
- Dylan Reynolds will look to earn career win 50 against Lock Haven on Thursday. He currently leads the team this season in wins with 25. The redshirt junior won the 197 lb. title at the Journeyman Northeast Open while finishing third at the PSAC Championships, fifth at the Michigan State Open, and sixth at the Southern Scuffle.
- Lock Haven (5-2, 2-0 EWL), opened the season with a pair of EWL wins over George Mason (28-10) and Bloomsburg (36-6). The were ranked by the NWCA as high as #14 earlier this season, but a pair of losses to Virginia (32-12) and Oklahoma (23-12) dropped the Bald Eagles out of the rankings. The Bald Eagles finished with four individual champions at the PSAC Championships and finished sixth at the Southern Scuffle with four place winners.
- Last weekend, Lock Haven upset #12 Arizona State, 23-14, in a dual that was wrestled at Red Lion HS, in Red Lion, Pa. The Bald Eagles won six of the bouts including a pin and a technical fall over the Sun Devils. They followed that up with a 45-0 shutout over DII and PSAC opponent Millersville. It marked the first shutout win for Lock Haven since 2008.
- Edinboro will host the Edinboro Open on Saturday, February 2. The all-day event starts at 9:00 a.m. and takes place in the Mike S. Zafirovski Dome. One week later on Saturday, February 9, Oklahoma will visit McComb Fieldhouse as the Fighting Scots have their final non-conference dual of the season. The match with the Sooners is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

HEAD COACH
EDINBORO -- Matt Hill (Edinboro '07, 1st Season) assumed the role of head wrestling coach at Edinboro University on May 18, 2018. The former Edinboro standout became the 12th head coach of the wrestling program, and fourth on the Division I level. Hill is no stranger to the Edinboro wrestling program. He competed for former head coach Tim Flynn from 2002-07, then entered the coaching profession. He served as a graduate assistant coach at Kent State from 2007-09. Following his two seasons as a graduate assistant, Hill remained involved in wrestling over the next year, working with Seneca Valley High School. He returned to Kent State as an assistant coach in 2010, and served in that capacity until 2015, when he was appointed associate head coach to head coach Jim Andrassy. During Hill's tenure at KSU as a graduate assistant and full-time assistant, the Golden Flashes went 116-78 in dual meets while enjoying several of the best seasons in program history. The 2015-16 KSU squad finished at 15-3 and was 16th at the NCAA National Championships, while the Golden Flashes were 14-5 in 2011-12 and 14-6 in 2010-11. In addition, Hill assisted in the development of three University National Champions and four Junior FILA National Freestyle All-Americans. Hill was a three-time national qualifier at Edinboro. He remains among the leading wrestlers all-time at Edinboro with a 105-42 career record, including a 32-7 record as a senior. In 2006-07 as a senior, he went 17-1 in dual meets while competing at 157 lbs. Hill was seeded 12th at nationals and posted a 2-2 record.
