THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Slippery Rock leads 53-28-7

Slippery Rock snapped a two-game losing streak to Edinboro with a 59-28 win a year ago. Edinboro had lost the last six meetings with Slippery Rock before winning at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in 2016, 37-35, on a touchdown scored on an untimed play at the end of the game due to a pass interference penalty in the end zone. That marked the first win at SRU since 2008. Two years ago, Edinboro upset an SRU squad that came in ranked 17th by a 49-39 count. It was the first win by the Fighting Scots on their home turf since 2009.

LAST YEAR'S GAME
Slippery Rock 59, Edinboro 28
The Fighting Scots were unable to slow down a Slippery Rock offense that came in leading the PSAC in scoring. The Rock would score on nine of their first ten possessions. Edinboro grabbed a short-lived 7-0 lead on a 14-yard TD pass from Jarrod Kellar to A.J. Turner on the opening possession. The score was still just 17-14 after Walter Fletcher's 33-yard scoring run late in the first quarter. SRU ran off the next three scores and would lead 45-21 at the half. Edinboro's score came on a 75-yard pass from Kellar to Ta'Nauz Gregory. The pair would hook up again for an 8-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. Fletcher enjoyed another impressive day, rushing for 144 yards on 15 carries and catching a career-high 7 passes for 33 yards. Kellar, in his first start as a Fighting Scot, completed 22-of-44 passes for 261 yards with 3 TDs and an INT. Gregory caught 4 passes for 109 yards and 2 TDs. Slippery Rock finished with 596 total yards, the tenth-highest figure all-time against Edinboro, compared to 414 for the Boro. Roland Rivers accounted for six TDs for Slippery Rock, throwing for five and running for a sixth. He threw for 403 yards and ran for another 82.

LAST WEEK
Mercyhurst 44, Edinboro 23

Edinboro jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter, but Mercyhurst would ultimately spoil Homecoming with a 44-23 win at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Lakers ran off 30 straight points to wear down the Fighting Scots, who played most of the game without starting quarterback Jordan Castelli, who was replacing injured starter Andrew Tomko. Edinboro's first two touchdowns came courtesy of the defense, as Ryan Bischof recovered a fumble in the end zone and Anthony Mendicino stripped a Laker and returned a fumble 15 yards for six points. The final score was courtesy of a 43-yard connection from Levi Becker to Ta'Nauz Gregory. It was the first career touchdown pass for Becker, and the 31st touchdown reception for Gregory. Gregory caught 8 passes for 99 yards, but the Edinboro offense was limited to 188 yard, including 31 yards on the ground.

Slippery Rock 45, Indiana(Pa.) 42
In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, ninth ranked Slippery Rock sprinted to a big lead then held off a second-half rally by 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.) to celebrate Homecoming with a 45-42 triumph in front of almost 10,000 fans. The win gives SRU sole possession of first place in the PSAC West. The Rock led 17-0 just over 11 minutes into the game and built a 31-7 lead late in the first half. IUP  began its comeback bid with a touchdown in the final minute of the half, and pulled to within 31-21 with a touchdown to start the third quarter. Slippery Rock needed just 35 seconds to answer on a 38-yard TD pass from Roland Rivers III to Jermaine Wynn Jr. to make it 38-21. IUP would tack on two more touchdowns to pull to within 38-35 midway through the fourth quarter, but Slippery Rock answered with a 75-yard drive that ate up 7 minutes and 5 seconds, culminated by a 12-yard touchdown run by Charles Snorweah with 1:30 remaining to boost the margin back up to 10 points. IUP would score with nine seconds left. SRU featured a balanced attack with 230 yards rushing and 180 yards passing. Rivers completed 15-of-24 passes for 180 yards with a touchdown and an interception, adding 81 yards rushing on 18 carries with a TD. Snorweath ran for 123 yards on 20 carries and DeSean Dinkins ran for two more scores.

THE COACHES
Wayne Bradford (Salisbury St. '90) was named Edinboro's 15th head coach on March 29, 2017 and led Edinboro to a 7-4 record in his first season. That was followed by a 6-5 finish a year ago, giving Bradford a 14-14 record in his third season. The 13 wins after two seasons are tied for the most by an Edinboro head coach in his first two seasons. After serving as interim head coach in 2017, that tag was removed less than a week after the conclusion of the season. With his tenth win as head coach coming against East Stroudsburg last year, Bradford is the fastest coach to reach 10 wins at Edinboro. Bradford has worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots' defensive coordinator, although in 2019 he will move over to the offensive side to oversee the offense. Bradford has master-minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. Two years ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II?in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro's teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9-4 and reached the Super Region One semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 118 wins.

Shawn Lutz (West Virginia '96) is in his fourth season at the helm of The Rock, but is in his 24th season as a member of the staff. He led SRU to a 7-4 finish in his first season as a head coach after taking over for legendary coach George Mihalik. Two years ago, The Rock finished at 8-3, and last year SRU was 11-3, winning the PSAC?West and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA?Tournament. They finished 12th in the final AFCA?Division II?Top 25. Lutz has an overall record of 32-10, and his 26 wins after three years are the most by an SRU coach after three seasons. He spent the previous four years as the associate head coach and the previous eight as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. He has been a part of nine PSAC?West titles at Slippery Rock.

THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro's 2019 campaign has been about injuries and tough opponents. That theme certainly holds true this week as the Fighting Scots host ninth-ranked Slippery Rock. The Fighting Scots come in with a 1-5 record and are 1-2 in the PSAC West after suffering a 44-23 loss to Mercyhurst on Homecoming. Slippery Rock, meanwhile, is off to a 6-0 start for just the sixth time in school history. The Rock comes off a 45-42 win over then 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.). SRU is ranked ninth in the latest AFCA?Division II?Top 25.
  • While Edinboro has struggled offensively, Slippery Rock will bring one of the top offenses in Division II to Sox Harrison Stadium. The Rock averages 51.7 ppg., second in the country, and 492.2 ypg. in total offense, which is eighth. SRU has scored at least 45 points in all six games.
  • Edinboro's first six opponents have a combined record of 20-16, but take away Bloomsburg (1-5) and Gannon (2-4), and the other four opponents are 17-7. East Stroudsburg and Grand Valley State are both 5-1, and Cal U is 4-2. Now this week the Fighting Scots face a 6-0 Slippery Rock team, with IUP (5-1) and possibly Kutztown (6-0) in the coming weeks.
  • Edinboro picked up its lone win two weeks ago,  as the Fighting Scots rallied from a 17-8 deficit to defeat Gannon 18-17. The winning points came on a 35-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Vicente Arriagada as time expired.
  • Injuries have been another factor in Edinboro's slow start. No fewer than eight different starters have missed games due to injuries. Most notable, starting quarterback Andrew Tomko has played in just three games and has missed the last two contests. His backup, Jordan Castelli, has started three games, but was lost in the first half last week. Third-string quarterback Levi Becker saw his first extended action against Mercyhurst, and is expected to make his first start vs. Slippery Rock. Freshman Brodie List is his backup.
  • It's hard to find a weakness with Slippery Rock. SRU showcases a prolific offense that ranks among the tops in Division II in scoring offense and total offense. Defensively, The Rock is among the national leaders in rushing defense and sacks. Finally, placekicker Jake Chapla ranks among the best in the country and is Slippery Rock's all-time leading scorer.  SRU finished at 11-3 a year ago, reaching the NCAA?Division II Tournament quarterfinals.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC?West Coaches Preseason Poll after finishing fourth in the division a year ago with a 3-4 ledger. Slippery Rock is the defending Western Division champion and was picked to finish first in the PSAC?West.
  • Brandon Anderson and Vicente Arriagada were accorded PSAC?honors for their play against Gannon. Anderson was named the PSAC?West Defensive Athlete of the Week, while Arriagada was selected the Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
  • Seven players earned All-PSAC?West accolades in 2018, with two returning. Strong safety Brandon Anderson was named to the All-PSAC?West first team for the second straight year after leading team in tackles for the second straight season with 101.  Anderson is fast approaching the top ten in career tackles and now has 306. Ta'Nauz Gregory was a first team All-PSAC?West selection at wide receiver and is now a two-time All-PSAC?West performer, along with being named the 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. He caught 50 passes for 796 yards and a league-high 10 TDs. He has moved into second place in career receptions with 203, just six shy of James Clark's school record of 209. He is also nearing records for career receiving yards, career receiving touchdowns, and set the record for career kickoff return yards last week.
