Edinboro to Host Red-White Wrestleoffs on October 24

Admission is Free with Public Invited to Attend

Jacob Oliver earned a bid to Nationals at 174 lbs.
EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro University wrestling coach Matt Hill has announced that the annual Red-White Wrestleoffs will take place on Thursday, October 24 at 6 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. The event is free and is open to the public.

The Red-White Wrestleoffs will give Hill, a former Edinboro standout who enters his second season as head coach, an opportunity to assess his lineup and could determine the starters at the beginning of the season.

The Fighting Scots open the 2019-20 campaign on Saturday, November 2 in the Kent State Duals. They will face Ashland, Kent State, and Mercyhurst North East. The Kent State contest will be the first Mid-American Conference dual for Edinboro. The MAC added members of the Eastern Wrestling League as affiliate members earlier this year.

"This is a great opportunity for our fans and boosters to come out and see our team compete before the official season starts," related Hill.  I'm excited to see how certain weight classes unfold and the guys compete down to weight for the first time."

A week later, on Friday, November 8, the Fighting Scots will wrestle for the first time in front of local fans, although not at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro will wrestle Wisconsin at 7 p.m. at Saegertown High School. The Big Ten Badgers are ranked third in numerous preseason polls.

A rebuilding Edinboro squad finished with a 2-9 record a year ago. Eight starters return, with a ninth – Zach Ancewicz – redshirting this season. Jacob Oliver and Dylan Reynolds spearhead the starting lineup. Oliver was 28-7 as a redshirt freshman last year while competing at 174 lbs., qualifying for the NCAA Division I National Championships. Reynolds, a redshirt senior, enjoyed a breakthrough season while competing at 197 lbs., finishing with a 32-12 record. In addition, junior Jon Spaulding emerged at heavyweight, finishing with a 22-14 record.

Hill noted that he expects to see the greatest competition at 133, 141, and 165 lbs.  With Ancewicz redshirting, blue chip recruit Cody Mulligan, a two-time PIAA state champion at nearby Saegertown High School steps into the lineup for his much-anticipated debut at 184 lbs.
