THE
ALL-TIME SERIES
Mercyhurst leads 8-7

Edinboro had won the previous two meetings before Mercyhurst came away with a 24-6 win a year ago. Prior to that, the Lakers had claimed the previous three meetings. Mercyhurst had won four straight games at Sox Harrison Stadium before Edinboro's 28-25 win on Homecoming in 2017.

LAST YEAR'S GAME
Mercyhurst 24, Edinboro 6
The Lakers scored on their first three possessions to jump out to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. Edinboro would close the gap to 17-6 on Jake Monroe field goals of 23 and 25 yards, but with just 12 seconds remaining in the half, the Lakers shocked the Fighting Scots with a 22-yard touchdown pass on a 3rd-and-15 play. Neither team would score in the second half. Edinboro had the ball in Mercyhurst territory, but two of the drives ended in interceptions, and a third on downs. Mercyhurst used a ball control offense to dominate time of possession -- 36:39 to 23:21. The Lakers also committed just one turnover against an Edinboro that came in leading Division II. Edinboro, meanwhile, threw three interceptions, the first interceptions all year by the Lakers. Edinboro finished with 329 total yards, 237 of that through the air.  Andrew Tomko completed 15 of 27 passes for 194 yards with 2 INTs, while Jarrod Kellar was 4-of-13 for 43 yards and a pickoff. Ta'Nauz Gregory caught 8 passes for 67 yards, and A.J. Turner had a pair for 74 yards. Walter Fletcher was limited to 67 yards on 17 carries. Mercyhurst's Garrett Turner bulled his way for 148 yards on 30 carries with a touchdown, and added a 60-yard TD reception. Doug Altavilla completed 15-of-17 passes for 224 yards and 2 TDs.

LAST WEEK
Edinboro 18, Gannon 17

Vicente Arriagada drilled a 35-yard field goal as time expired to provide Edinboro its first win of the season. The redshirt freshmen made three field goals in all, the others covering 46 and 25 yards, with his third of the day setting off a wild celebration. The Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 17-8 early in the third quarter, but the defense held Gannon scoreless the rest of the way. Edinboro would close the gap to 17-15 in the final minute of the third quarter as quarterback Jordan Castelli drove the Fighting Scots 74 yards. The last four yards went to Ta'Nauz Gregory for his 30th career touchdown reception. The winning drive was set up by a defensive stand that forced a punt with 3:02 remaining. Edinboro took over at the Gannon 46 and picked up a pair of first down to reach the GU 17. With three seconds remaining, Arriagada came in and hit the game-winning three-pointer as the clock hit :00's. Edinboro won for the first time at Gannon since 2011.  Castelli, making his second start for injured starter Andrew Tomko, completed 18-of-35 passes for 189 yards with a touchdown and 2 INTs. Gregory caught 9 passes for 78 yards, with Andre Dowdell adding 4 for 84 yards. Dorian Woody ran for 73 yards on 24 carries. Edinboro held Gannon to 305 yards, keyed by Brandon Anderson's 10 tackles.

Slippery Rock 45, Mercyhurst 14
Mercyhurst suffered its second consecutive PSAC West loss, falling at home to tenth-ranked Slippery Rock.  The Rock jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead after one quarter on a pair of touchdown passes and a field goal.  The lead would grow to 24-0 early in the second quarter on a 70-yard punt return for six points. Mercyhurst would climb back into the game with the next two scores. Joseph Scro returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown, and Doug Altavilla followed with a 41-yard TD pass to Garrett Owens.  SRU stretched the lead to 31-14 with a score before the half ended. The Rock would tack on two more touchdown passes in the third quarter.  Slippery Rock outgained Mercyhurst 416-162, including 211 to minus 12 on the ground.  Owens, one of the top ballcarriers in the PSAC, was limited to 7 yards on 7 carries, but he did lead the Lakers with 5 receptions for 54 yards.  Altavilla completed 13-of-23 passes for 93 yards with a touchdown and 2 INTs. Michael Lowery came in and completed 7-of-15 passes for 81 yards with two more pickoffs.

THE COACHES
Wayne Bradford (Salisbury St. '90) was named Edinboro's 15th head coach on March 29, 2017 and led Edinboro to a 7-4 record in his first season. That was followed by a 6-5 finish a year ago, giving Bradford a 14-13 record in his third season. The 13 wins after two seasons is tied for the most by an Edinboro head coach in his first two seasons. After serving as interim head coach in 2017, that tag was removed less than a week after the conclusion of the season. With his tenth win as head coach coming against East Stroudsburg last year, Bradford is the fastest coach to reach 10 wins at Edinboro. Bradford has worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots' defensive coordinator, although in 2019 he will move over to the offensive side to oversee the offense. Bradford has master-minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. Two years ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II?in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro's teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9-4 and reached the Super Region One semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 118 wins.

Marty Schaetzle (Bucknell '83) is the dean of coaches in the PSAC West.  Schaetzle is in his 18th season at the helm of the Lakers, and has an 89-103 career record.  He surpassed Joe Kimball as the longest-tenured football coach at the Hurst, and his 89 wins represent a school record.  In 2010, he guided Mercyhurst to the finest season in school history, winning the PSAC?Championship and reaching the Super Regional One Championship Game.  The Lakers finished with a 10-3 record and he was recognized as the PSAC West?Coach of the Year and Don Hansen Football Gazette Co-Coach of the Year.  In 2012, he led the Lakers to a 9-2 finish. Schaetzle took over the Mercyhurst program after working as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Bucknell, for five years.

THE GAME STORIES
  • It's Homecoming at Edinboro, as the Fighting Scots play the second of back-to-back games vs. local rivals. A week ago Edinboro picked up its first win of the season with a last-second 18-17 win at Gannon. Now the Fighting Scots look to complete the sweep of Gannon and Mercyhurst for the first time since 2016. This is the first of back-to-back home games, with the Fighting Scots hosting ninth-ranked Slippery Rock on Saturday, October 19.
  • The Fighting Scots come in with an 1-4 record while facing a demanding schedule. To date, the Fighting Scots five opponents own a record of 15-10.  Win number one came in dramatic fashion last Saturday, as Edinboro rallied from a 17-8 deficit to defeat Gannon 18-17. The winning points came on a 35-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Vicente Arriagada as time expired. The Edinboro defense turned in another strong effort, holding a Gannon team that scored 51 points the week before against Clarion to just 17 points and 305 total yards.
  • Edinboro has faced a demanding schedule to date, with two teams coming in at 4-0 and another at 3-1. The Fighting Scots opened the season with a 35-10 loss at then 12th-ranked Grand Valley State (4-1), followed by a 24-21 setback to Bloomsburg in the home opener. That was followed by a 34-14 loss at East Stroudsburg (5-0). Two weeks ago Edinboro dropped a hard-fought 24-7 setback to Cal U (3-2).
  • Like Edinboro, Mercyhurst has faced a demanding schedule. The Lakers come into the game with a 2-3 record and are 0-2 in the PSAC?West. They opened the year with a 21-16 win over Lake Erie, and also own a 38-24 win at Bloomsburg.  They had the unenviable task of opening the conference season against nationally-ranked Indiana(Pa.) and Slippery Rock, losing those two games by a combined 101-38. However, the Lakers gave a strong Shepherd squad all they could handle before falling 22-17.
  • The Edinboro-Mercyhurst game features a pair of teams struggling to find consistency on offense. Edinboro is averaging 14.0 ppg. and 232.2 yards per game in total offense, ranking 14th in both categories in the PSAC, while Mercyhurst comes in 22.8 ppg. and 288.2 ypg., good for 12th and 10th, respectively, in the conference.
  • Mercyhurst holds a narrow 8-7 lead in the all-time series thanks to a 24-6 win a year ago. The Lakers have won four of the last five meetings at Sox Harrison Stadium, with Edinboro ending a four-game skid in 2017, winning 28-25. That also came on Homecoming.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC?West Coaches Preseason Poll after finishing fourth in the division a year ago with a 3-4 ledger. Mercyhurst posted a 5-6 record a year ago and was picked to finish fourth in the PSAC?West.
  • Brandon Anderson and Vicente Arriagada were accorded PSAC?honors for their play against Gannon. Anderson was named the PSAC?West Defensive Athlete of the Week, while Arriagada was selected the Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
  • Edinboro will recognize the 1989 team on Saturday. That squad won the PSAC?Western Division championship and received a first-ever NCAA?Division II?Playoff bid.
  • Seven players earned All-PSAC?West accolades in 2018, with two returning. Strong safety Brandon Anderson was named to the All-PSAC?West first team for the second straight year after leading team in tackles for the second straight season with 101.  Anderson is fast approaching the top ten in career tackles and now has 306. Ta'Nauz Gregory was a first team All-PSAC?West selection at wide receiver and is now a two-time All-PSAC?West performer, along with being named the 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. He caught 50 passes for 796 yards and a league-high 10 TDs. He has moved into second place in career receptions with 195, just 14 shy of James Clark's school record of 209. He is also nearing records for career receiving yards, career receiving touchdowns, and career kickoff return yards.
  • After opening the 2019 campaign in Michigan at Grand Valley State, the Bloomsburg game marked the first of ten straight games in Pennsylvania against PSAC teams to wrap up the season.
