Oliver Leads Quartet of Medalists with First Place Showing at Navy Classic

Jacob Oliver won the title at 174 lbs.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Edinboro wrestling team turned in a strong showing while competing in the Navy Classic on Saturday. A total of 18 teams participated in the event, with Edinboro finishing eight with 80 points, and  four wrestlers earning medals.

Virginia Tech won the team title with 116 points, with Campbell second with 107. Michigan State came in third (99), Lock Haven was fourth (85), and Rutgers fifth (83.5).

After finishing second a year ago at 174 lbs., Jacob Oliver took the next step and finished as the champion. Jon Spaulding finished third at heavyweight, with Peter Pappas and Dylan Reynolds placing fifth at 157 and 197 lbs., respectively.

Oliver went 5-0 on the day. The number three seed, he won by default over top seed Spencer Carey of Navy in the title bout. But the real story came in his semifinal match with second-seeded Jared Siegrist. The two met three times last year, with Oliver prevailing in close decisions each time. The redshirt sophomore claimed a 10-4 decision on Saturday thanks to a big third period. He pulled away with an escape, takedown, and two near-fall points in the period. Oliver is now 9-1.

Spaulding went 4-1 on the day to improve to 9-2. The junior, seeded seventh, posted a pair of wins to reach the semifinals. He won a 4-2 decision over second seed and 19th-ranked Christian Colucci of Rutgers in the quarterfinals. He would lose to third-seeded John Borst of Virginia Tech, 6-2, in the semifinals, but came back to claim a 10-1 major decision over fourth-seed Kayne Hutchison of Air Force in the third place match.

Pappas won five of his six matches to claim fifth at 157 lbs. Seeded eighth, he won twice to reach the quarterfinals, where he would lose to top seed and 14th-ranked B.C. LaPrade of Virginia tech. Pappas would rally with three more wins, including a 7-5 decision over Kolby Ho of George Mason in the fifth place match. Pappas is now 10-2.

Reyniolds came in as the fifth seed at 197 lbs., and that is where the redshirt senior finished. He would lose in the quarterfinals, but came with three more wins. That included a 6-3 upset of second-seeded Stan Smeltzer of Virginia Tech. In the fifth place bout, Reynolds handed Ohio's Jake Walker a 6-2 defeat. He now has an 8-2 record.

A total of 16 wrestlers competed for Edinboro. They included Cody Mulligan, who went 4-2 at 184 lbs., one win shy of medaling, Tye Varndell (2-2) at 133 lbs., and Carmine Ciotti (2-2) at 141 lbs.
