Boro Battles Seventh-Ranked Badgers in Front of Sold-Out Saegertown High School Crowd

Peter Pappas won an 8-5 decision at 157 lbs.
SAEGERTOWN, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team wrestled its "home" opener in front of a packed house at nearby Saegertown High School. The Fighting Scots would suffer their first loss of the year, a 28-15 decision to seventh-ranked Wisconsin. But the real winners were northwest Pennsylvania wrestling fans, particularly northern Crawford County, with four local wrestlers in the lineup.

The loss brings Edinboro's record to 3-1 while the Big Ten Badgers are now 5-0. It marked the first meeting between the two schools since 1993-94.

The Fighting Scot faithful had something to cheer about early on as Lucas Rodriguez opened the night with a 1-0 win over Michael Cullen at 125 lbs. He scored the lone point of the night with an escape late in the second period, then rode out Cullen in the third. Rodriguez improved to 4-0.

Wisconsin would run off bonus point wins in the next three bouts. Top-ranked Seth Gross, the defending national champion at 133 lbs., began the run with a fall of freshman Tye Varndell at 2:00. Tristan Moran, ranked ninth at 141 lbs., followed with another pin, this one over Carmine Ciotti at 4:59. Cole Martin, ranked 13th at 149 lbs., wrapped up the run with a 17-4 major decision over Tyler Vath, one of three former Saegertown High School standouts competing. That gave the Badgers a 16-3 lead.

Peter Pappas picked up Edinboro's second win of the night with an 8-5 decision over Garrett Model at 157 lbs. Pappas led 2-1 after one period, and still led 4-3 after two following a second takedown. He added an escape to start the third period and added another takedown.

Third-ranked Evan Wick gave Wisconsin its third fall of the night, flattening Derek Ciavarro at 2:01 in their 165 lb. match.

Edinboro countered with an 8-4 decision for Jacob Oliver over Jared Kattiger at 174 lbs. Oliver, now 2-1 and ranked 23rd by FloWrestling, won on the strength of a big second period. The redshirt sophomore trailed 2-1 after one period. After Krattiger made it 3-1 with an escape, Oliver knotted the match with a takedown, recorded two near-fall points, and after another Krattiger escape, took the Badger down for the second time in the period to lead 7-4.

Tyler Dow rallied late to claim a 5-2 win over another former Saegertown standout, former two-time PIAA state champion Cody Mulligan. The two were tied at 2-2 after two periods, but an escape and takedown in the final seconds gave Dow the win at 184 lbs., as Wisconsin went up 25-9.

The Saegertown fans finally had something to cheer about when Dylan Reynolds picked up a win at 197 lbs., but unfortunately that win came via forfeit.

Edinboro's Jon Spaulding would put up a good battle against fourth-ranked Trent Hillger at heavyweight before falling 4-0.  Hillger used a first period takedown, second period escape and riding time to improve to 5-0, while Spaulding is now 3-1.

The Fighting Scots will return to action on Saturday, November 16, hosting the Boro Duals. The action gets underway at 10 a.m. with Edinboro squaring off against Ohio University in a Mid-American Conference dual. Later in the day the Scots will face LIU.
