The Game Story
  • Edinboro continued its late season surge with a 90-86 overtime win over Clarion on Saturday. The Fighting Scots have now won four of their last six games, with the last two wins coming in overtime. That leaves the Scots with a 9-15 overall record and 6-13 in the PSAC West, battling for one of two remaining PSAC Tournament berths with Gannon, Seton Hill, and California(Pa.).  Indiana(Pa.) is riding a five-game winning streak and is 24-2 overall and sits atop the PSAC West with a 17-2 record. The Crimson Hawks were ranked second in the latest NABC Division II Top 25 and third in the D2SIDA Division II Top 25. They were first in last week's initial NCAA Atlantic Region rankings.
  • Edinboro will hold Senior Night festivities prior to tipoff. Jack Frank, a member of the Fighting Scots for three seasons after transferring from Lees-McRae, has started 55 games at Edinboro and will be the lone senior recognized. Anthony Coleman played the first four games before going down with a season-ending injury and is expected to receive a medical redshirt year. In addition, Trey Staunch has a year of eligibility remaining in basketball and intends to return in 2019-20.
  • Indiana(Pa.) (17-2), Slippery Rock (16-4), Mercyhurst (14-5), and Pitt-Johnstown (10-10)  have locked down four of the Western Division's six playoff berths. That leaves Gannon (7-12), Seton Hill (7-12), Edinboro (6-13), and California(Pa.) (5-14) battling for two remaining spots. The Fighting Scots must win both of their remaining games and get some help, as well. Edinboro's two remaining games are against two of the top three teams in the Western Division, hosting IUP then playing at Mercyhurst  on Saturday, March 2 to wrap up the regular season.
  • The Fighting Scots come into the game ranked 10th in the PSAC in scoring at 74.2 ppg., along with 16th in scoring defense (82.5 ppg.). IUP is fifth in scoring at 81.0 ppg., and is tied for second in scoring defense at 66.0 ppg. The Crimson Hawks are also second in field goal percentage defense (40.1 pct.).  Edinboro continues to rely a great deal on the 3-pointer, ranking fourth in 3-pointers made per game (9.1).
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The 2018-19 Fighting Scots lost their top returning player, All-PSAC selection Anthony Coleman, after four games, and were also without DeAnthony Owens for an extended period.
On the Radio/Video

Last Meeting
January 21, 2019 – IUP 102, Edinboro 53 at Indiana, Pa. BOX | RECAP
  • In a rematch of last year's PSAC Quarterfinals, a young and short-handed Edinboro team fell at fifth-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 102-53. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday but postponed until Monday due to the weekend's winter storm. The Crimson Hawks left little doubt to the outcome, grabbing a 65-25 lead at the half while avenging their loss in the PSAC Tournament.
  • Edinboro ended the day shooting 27.9 percent from the floor (17-of-61), making 7-of-29 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots went 12-of-17 at the free throw line. After shooting 57 percent in the first half, IUP would end the day at 49.4 percent (38-of-77), with 10 3-pointers in 30 attempts, and made 16-of-21 free throws.
  • The Crimson Hawks held a 52-36 advantage on the glass. Edinboro committed 21 turnovers compared to nine for IUP. That led to a 35-8 advantage in points off turnovers for IUP.
  • Trey Staunch led Edinboro with 17 points, adding eight rebounds. Jaryn Simpson was also in double figures with 14 points, falling a rebound shy of a double-double while leading the Fighting Scots with nine boards.
  • A balanced IUP attack saw seven players score in double figures, led by Malik Miller with 18 points. Dante Lombardi had 16 points and 10 assists, while Jacobo Diaz also had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Head Coach Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 74-84, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro needed overtime for the second time in the last three games, but came away with a 90-86 win over Clarion on Saturday. The victory was the fourth in the last six games, with the two losses by five points to Seton Hill and two points at Slippery Rock, and kept the Fighting Scots alive in the PSAC playoff race. Edinboro has a 9-15 overall record and is 6-13 mark in PSAC action. The Scots was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason after finishing fourth in the division with an 18-11 record a year ago.
  • Saturday's 90-86 overtime win over Clarion was a back-and-forth affair featuring 14 ties and seven lead changes. Jaryn Simpson sent the game into overtime with a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining. In overtime, freshmen Kameron King and Turner Kurt hit 3-pointers, and Simpson's trifecta with ten seconds left gave the Scots an 88-83 lead. Clarion would come down and hit a three, but King made a pair of free throws with two seconds to play to clinch the win.
  • Simpson overcame an injury in the first half to record his 11th game with 20-or-more points, finishing with 25 points. He has enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore. The 6'2" guard averaged 3.4 ppg. as a freshman, but has boosted that total to 18.1 ppg., which ranks seventh in the PSAC. Against Pitt-Johnstown recently, he accomplished something that hasn't been done by a Fighting Scot since the 2007-08 season. Simpson recorded a triple-double, the first since Ryan McLemore had one against Slippery Rock on February 13, 2008. Simpson scored a game-high 25 points, adding a career-high 14 rebounds and matching his career-best with 11 assists. Simpson has scored in double figures in 21 of 24 games. He scored a career-high 34 points vs. Bloomsburg and 33 in the first meeting with Pitt-Johnstown. Simpson leads the PSAC in free throw percentage (89.2 pct.), fourth in 3-point field goals made per game (3.0), sixth in assists (4.5 per game), and 11th in 3-point field goal percentage (37.1 pct.). He has also become Edinboro's latest ironman, ranking fifth in the PSAC in minutes (37.0 per game).
  • Trey Staunch has put together three straight double-double efforts, including a career-high 23 points against Clarion, while matching his career high with 12 rebounds.  He has had six double-doubles in all. Staunch provides the inside muscle, averaging 14.2 ppg. and a team-high 7.4 rpg.   A 6'4", 280 lb. senior who earned second team All-PSAC West honors as an offensive tackle, he is in his second season on the hardcourt. Staunch ranks eighth in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 52.2 percent. He has scored in double figures in 20 of 23 games.
  • DeAnthony Owens has played a major role in the six-game stretch after sitting out eight straight games. He saw just three minutes of action in one contest due to an injury, but has averaged 18.3 ppg. over the last three games. The junior guard had a 23-point effort last Wednesday at Slippery Rock that included four big dunks. In 16 games, the 6'4" transfer from New Mexico JC is averaging 12.9 ppg. and has made 27-of-79 3-pointers.
  • Turner Kurt has started the last 14 contests at forward. The 6'8" freshman is averaging 9.0 ppg. and 4.5 rpg., and has made 38-of-98 3-pointers. He also has a team-high 18 blocked shots. Kurt registered his first career double-double against Seton Hill recently with 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.
Scouting the Crimson Hawks
  • Indiana(Pa.) owns a 24-2 record and is 17-2 in the PSAC West. The Crimson Hawks were ranked second in the latest NABC Division II Top 25, along with third in the D2SIDA Division II Top 25. They also topped the Atlantic Region in the initial set of NCAA regional rankings released last week. IUP enters McComb Fieldhouse riding a five-game winning streak since suffering its second loss of the season, 64-63, on a last-second 3-pointer to Mercyhurst. The other setback came by five points at Slippery Rock. IUP has clinched the top spot in the PSAC West and will host a PSAC Tournament quarterfinal playoff game on March 6.
  • Head coach Joe Lombardi, a former assistant at Pittsburgh, is in his 13th season with the Crimson Hawks and has a 299-99 overall record with eight NCAA tournament appearances, eight regular season division titles, three PSAC Tournament championships (2010, 2011, 2013), two Atlantic Region Championships (2010, 2015), and two Division II national title game appearances (2010, 2015). Lombardi began the season ranked 12th in PSAC history and third among active coaches in victories. He has led IUP to 11th straight 20-win seasons. He is one win shy of becoming the third active PSAC coach with 300 career victories, and would become the fastest PSAC coach to 300 with his next victory.
  • The trio of Jacobo Diaz, Malik Miller, and Dante Lombardi combine for over 51 points per game. Diaz, a 6'9" senior, ranks fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 19.0 ppg. The 2017 PSAC West Athlete of the Year is also third in the conference in rebounding (9.3 rpg.) and seventh in field goal percentage (53.2 pct.). He had his 14th double-double of the season in Saturday's 65-60 win over California(Pa.) with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Diaz is a two-time All-PSAC West first team selection who earned All-American honors as a sophomore. He ranks fifth in career scoring (1,647 points) and second in career rebounds (1,044).
  • Senior guard Dante Lombardi is the son of head coach Joe Lombardi. He comes in averaging 16.5 ppg., leading the team in assists (147) and steals (65). Lombardi has made 82-of-217 3-pointers. He leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.0), is second in assists per game (5.7), and third in steals per game (2.5). Lombardi is a three-time All-PSAC West honoree who ranks 12th in career points (1,462), holds the IUP record for career assists (544), and ranks third in career 3-pointers made (249).
  • Malik Miller adds 16.7 ppg. A 6'4" junior, Miller contributes 4.4 rpg. and stands second on the team with 86 assists. He has made 56-of-163 3-pointers.
  • Forward Willem Brandwijk, a 6'8" senior, adds 8.6 ppg. and is second on the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg.).
  • Former Meadville High School standout Armoni Foster has started eight games and is averaging 8.0 ppg. and has made 34-of-100 3-pointers.  He is a 6'4" redshirt freshman.
