Head Coach Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 71-82, 6th Year

  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro turned in one of its best performances of the season on Wednesday while knocking off a Pitt-Johnstown team that came in fourth in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots snapped a two-game losing streak while improving to 6-13 overall and 3-11 in the PSAC West. They were picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason after finishing fourth in the division with an 18-11 record a year ago.
  • Facing a UPJ team that led the PSAC in field goal percentage defense, Edinboro shot 52.5 percent for the game, making a season-high 15 3-pointers in 29 attempts. Edinboro also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Mountain Cats, 46-27.
  • Jaryn Simpson continues to enjoy a breakout season as a sophomore. The 6'2" guard averaged 3.4 ppg. as a freshman, but has boosted that total to 18.6 ppg., tied for sixth in the PSAC in scoring. Against UPJ, he accomplished something that hasn't been done by a Fighting Scot since the 2007-08 season. Simpson recorded a triple-double, the first since Ryan McLemore had one against Slippery Rock on February 13, 2008. Simpson scored a game-high 25 points, his ninth game of 20-or-more points, while adding a career-high 14 rebounds and matching his career-best with 11 assists. Simpson has scored in double figures in 17 of 19 games, including a career-high 34 points vs. Bloomsburg and 33 in the first meeting with Pitt-Johnstown. Simpson leads the PSAC in free throw percentage (90.1 pct.), is fourth in assists (4.8 per game) and 3-point field goals made (2.9), and 11th in 3-point field goal percentage (35.7 pct.). He has also become Edinboro's latest ironman, ranking second in the PSAC in minutes (37.7 per game). He has played all 40 minutes the last five games.
  • Trey Staunch is Mr. Inside to Simpson's Mr. Outside. A 6'4", 280 lb. senior who earned second team All-PSAC West honors as an offensive tackle, he is in his second season on the hardcourt. Staunch is averaging 13.9 ppg. and a team-high 6.8 rpg. While hitting an occasional 15-foot jumper, his forte is muscling his way for layups, normally while giving up several inches inside. He ranks sixth in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 52.7 percent. Staunch matched his career-high with 12 rebounds vs. UPJ, and also had a career-high seven assists.
  • While second All-PSAC West performer Anthony Coleman has played just four games this season due to an injury, the Fighting Scots were bolstered by the return of DeAnthony Owens. The 6'4" junior had missed the previous eight games. He came off the bench to contribute 14 points in 18 minutes, including four key free throws in the final minute. Owens is averaging 13.2 ppg. in 11 games, and has made 21-of-61 3-pointers.
  • Daylon Harris joined Owens this season as a junior college transfer. A 6'5" junior, Harris made 4-of-6 3-pointers against UPJ to finish with 14 points. He has boosted his average to 8.2 ppg. while averaging 12.3 ppg. over the last four games, adding 5.8 rpg. during that stretch.
  • Freshman Turner Kurt has played a key role throughout the year while starting the last nine contests. The 6'8" forward is averaging 8.5 ppg. and 4.4 rpg. while making 27-of-72 3-pointers. Kurt scored a season-high 18 points in the first meeting with Pitt-Johnstown, and this past Wednesday dropped in 17 points against the Mountain Cats, making 7-of-10 field goals.
  • Coleman's injury forced sophomore Alex Jay into the lineup for major minutes. The 6'3" swingman is averaging 5.8 ppg. and is third on the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg.). He had struggled of late, making four of his previous 18 shots, but Jay was perfect against UPJ. He made all four of his field goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers, to match his high with 10 points.
Scouting the Vulcans
  • California(Pa.) comes into the contest with a 7-13 record, including 5-9 in the PSAC West, while facing a demanding schedule that has featured some of the top teams in the region, including Fairmont State, Notre Dame(Oh.), West Chester, Concord, and East Stroudsburg, plus IUP, Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst in the PSAC West. The Vulcans had a bye on Wednesday and last played a week ago, suffering a 91-71 loss at Slippery Rock. In fact, they have lost five of their last six games. Cal was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC West after ending 2017-18 with an 11-17 record.
  • Head coach Danny Sancomb is in his first season at Cal after a highly-successful run at Wheeling Jesuit. Sancomb served as the Cardinals' head coach for 11 seasons, posting a 216-115 record. He guided Wheeling Jesuit to 100 wins over the last four seasons thanks to four consecutive 20-win seasons. A year ago, he guided the Cardinals to the Mountain East Conference championship, a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, and a 26-6 record. The year before, WJU made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and finished the year at 25-8. In the 2015-16 season, Sancomb led Wheeling Jesuit to a school-record 28 wins and the Cardinals were ranked No. 1 in the NABC national rankings for the first time in program history. Sancomb was named both the NABC Atlantic Region and MEC Coach of the Year.
  • Five players are scoring in double figures, led by Brent Pegram. The 5'11" sophomore joined Sancomb from Wheeling Jesuit, and is tied for sixth in the PSAC in scoring at 18.6 ppg. He also ranks second in the conference in steals (2.8) and seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (40.3 pct.). He has made 50-of-124 3-pointers and has a team-high 79 assists. Pegram burned the Fighting Scots for 34 points in January, making 8-of-10 3-pointers.
  • Freshmen Zyan Collins and Collin MacAdams have started all 20 games. Collins, a 6'3" guard, comes in at 15.1 ppg. and 5.6 rpg. with 70 assists and a team-high 18 blocked shots. He had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists in the first meeting. MacAdams, a 6'5" forward, adds 14.1 ppg. and 7.5 rpg.
  • A third freshman -- Jermaine Hall Jr. -- started the first 12 games, but has missed the last eight contests. A 6'4" swingman, Hall was scoring at a 12.6 ppg. clip and leading the team in rebounding at 8.1 per game.
  • Donte' Williams, a 6'4" redshirt junior, is the fifth Vulcan in double digits at 10.9 ppg. in 16 games. He adds 5.0 rpg.
