EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men's tennis begins their quest to win the 2019 PSAC Men's Tennis Championship this weekend when face off against Millersville on Friday, May 3 in the semifinals. By virtue of a 4-1 PSAC record, the Fighting Scots earned the number two seed. The Marauders are the number three seed. The match with Millersville gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
Bloomsburg is the host university for the 2019 Championships.
Second-year Head Coach
Kody Duncan will bring a team that is currently ranked third in the region and features three seniors and three freshmen into the tournament.
Mateus Santos played the entire season at the top singles spot for the Fighting Scots. He went 7-12 this spring in singles while teaming with
Tommy Hsu at number two doubles for the majority of the spring finishing with an 9-2 record. Against the Marauders, Santos won his doubles match 6-2 before falling in singles 6-1, 6-2 to Carlos Martinez-Lucas.
At number two singles,
Mauricio Santos finished with a 15-4 record. In doubles he went 15-2 while teaming up with
Mateus Santos and
Nils Plutat. In the match against Millersville, Santos won a 6-2 decision with
Nils Plutat in doubles before picking up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Peter Landis in singles.
Plutat joined the Fighting Scots in the spring and finished with a 15-3 record in both singles and doubles. He played a mix of number three and four singles while spending most of the season at number three doubles with
Mauricio Santos. Plutat was a double winner against the Marauders earlier this spring winning 6-2 in doubles and a 6-0, 6-2 win in singles.
Tommy Hsu was another spring addition for Edinboro. He finished the regular season with an 11-6 record playing between two and four doubles. After winning 6-2 in doubles with
Mateus Santos, Hsu won a tight match against Ben Fellman of Millersville in three sets, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5), 1-0 (5).
Playing at number one doubles all spring,
Kevin Mboko finished with a 7-11 record with
Julius Schulte. In singles, Mboko played at number five ending with a 14-4 record. In the match against Millersville earlier this season, Mboko won 6-3 in doubles with Schulte while coming away with a 6-2, 6-4 win in singles against Jose Alcazar.
Schulte finished the season playing all but one match at number six singles, ending with a 9-5 record in the spring. In doubles he teamed up with
Kevin Mboko, mostly at number one, finishing with a 7-12. Against the Marauders, Schulte won his doubles match 6-3 before dropping a third-set tiebreak to Rodrigo Lorencin 6-4, 4-6, 0-1 (9).
"Millersville is a tough team," mentioned Duncan, "We could have easily lost that match. Their top player is a transfer from a Div. I team. I think it will be a very competitive match when we play them."
Edinboro is ranked third in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region rankings with Bluefield State sitting at the top spot and Mercyhurst is number two. West Virginia Wesleyan and Charleston (WV) round out the top five.
Overall, the Fighting Scots are a combined 34-11 in singles and doubles against PSAC opponents this spring.
The winner of the Edinboro/Millersville match will face the winner of the Mercyhurst/Bloomsburg match on Saturday, May 4 in the final, with the winner earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
