MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro opened the 2019 campaign on Thursday, September 5 with a 3-0 loss at fifth-ranked Bloomsburg. The Huskies are the defending PSAC champions. That was followed by a 3-2 loss to Notre Dame(Oh.) a week ago.
  • The Fighting Scots were scheduled to open PSAC West against Mercyhurst this past Wednesday. That contest fell victim to the weather. After nearly a three-hour delay due to lightning, the teams took the field just before 9 p.m. They would play for less than seven minutes before another lightning strike nearby signaled the end of the contest. The match will now be made up on Monday, September 23 at 6 p.m., and will be played in its entirety.
  • While the IUP contest marks the PSAC opener for the Fighting Scots, the Crimson hawks opened divisional play on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over Cal U.  IUP was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC West while Edinboro was voted sixth.  With the new divisional format, the teams will meet twice this year.
  • In a physical contest that saw both teams score on penalty kicks, Notre Dame's Kady Cushing scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute as the Falcons won for the first time against Edinboro. Brittnie Spithaler and Sidney Dobbins each scored their first goals of the season for Edinboro as the Fighting Scots. Spithaler's goal was assisted by Danielle Chatten. Dobbins scored on a penalty kick.
  • Edinboro posted a 6-11-0 finish a year ago while fielding a young squad. Head coach Gary Kagiavas welcomes back nine starters for his 24th season as head coach.  Kagiavas has a 219-180-37 record, all as Edinboro's only head coach. The Fighting Scots have qualified for the PSAC Playoffs 11 times, with seven of those in the last nine years. With 219 wins, Kagiavas ranks 24th among active Division II coaches in victories. In addition, he ranks second in wins among PSAC women's soccer coaches, exceeded only by West Chester's Betsy Anne Kempf-Townsley with 332 wins.  He has been selected the PSAC Coach of the Year three times (2001, '05, '07)..
  • Edinboro returns its top four scorers, including leading scorer Danielle Chatten. The senior forward finished with 7 goals and an assist for 15 points. She enters her final season tied for 14th in career points (44) and 14th in career goals (17).
  • Brittnie Spithaler added 5 goals and 2 assists for 12 points, while Rebecca Manns had 3 goals and a team-leading 5 assists. The redshirt junior forward has led the team in assists each of her first two seasons and is tied for 15th in career assists (11).
  • Junior Cameron Bujnoski earned third team United Soccer Coaches NCAA All-Atlantic Region honors. She was one of only three players to start all 17 matches while playing defender.
  • As a freshman, Anna Voelker started all 17 matches in goal, playing all 1544:45 minutes, which ranks eighth in a season. She finished with a 1.51 GAA and had 109 saves, which ranks second in a season.
  • IUP comes in with a 2-0-0 record, opening the season with a 5-0 win over Glenville State.
  • Mahogany Willis, a sophomore forward, has scored six of IUP's eight goals. She earned third team All-PSAC honors last year after contributing 14 goals aand an assist for 29 points.
  • The PSAC has a new look in 2019. With the addition of Shepherd to the conference from the Mountain East Conference, the league has been split into two divisions, with Edinboro in the Western Division.
UP NEXT
  • After wrapping up what was to be a three-match homestand, Edinboro hits the highways for a pair of matches. That stretch begins on Wednesday, September 18 at Cal U.
