THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Cal leads 48-35-7

Cal holds a 48-35-2 lead in the all-time series with Edinboro thanks to winning the last 14 meetings.  The last time Edinboro defeated Cal was 2004, a 42-28 win at Sox Harrison Stadium.

LAST YEAR'S GAME
Cal 40, Edinboro 35
The Fighting Scots found themselves behind 34-21 in the third quarter in their PSAC West opener, then rallied to take a 35-34 lead with eight minutes remaining. Walter Fletcher accounted for the first score on a seven-yard run, and Kyle Galyk gave the Scots the lead when he scooted in from 17 yards out one play after a 41-yard run by Fletcher. Unfortunately, the Vulcans drove 65 yards on the ensuing possession, posting the winning score with 5:20 to play. Fletcher scored twice for Edinboro, adding a one-yard scoring run, but was held to 66 yards on 17 carries. Andrew Tomko accounted for Edinboro's other two scores, throwing a five-yard TD pass to Ta'Nauz Gregory and scoring on a 21-yard. The latter touchdown came on a fake field goal. Tomko completed 10-of-30 passes for 143 yards with a TD and 2 INTs. California(Pa.) finished with 458 yards, a season-high against the Scots, while holding Edinboro to a season-low 258 yards. The Scots forced six turnovers for the third time this season, including four interceptions, with Zuril Hendrick picking off a pair of passes.

LAST WEEK
East Stroudsburg 34, Edinboro 14

The good news for Edinboro last Saturday was they may have found a running back to replace Walter Fletcher. The bad news, four turnovers led to a third straight loss to open the 2019 campaign as East Stroudsburg scored following three of the miscues and ended the half on the other. The Warriors jumped ahead quickly with a score on the game's first possession, then scored again after Edinboro fumbled the ensuing kickoff for a 14-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game. They would later take advantage of three Jordan Castelli interceptions to tack on 10 points. Castelli was starting in place of injured quarterback Andrew Tomko. The redshirt sophomore would complete 16-of-30 passes for 186 yards. The biggest bright spot was Dorian Woody. The freshman running back accounted for both of Edinboro's touchdowns on runs of 20 and 2 yards, and finished the afternoon with 104 yards on 19 carries, adding 3 receptions for 46 yards. Ta'Nauz Gregory caught 7 passes for 78 yards.

East Stroudsburg 58, Shippensburg 7
The Vulcans amassed over 500 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers while rolling to the win over Shippensburg at Adamson Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Noah Mitchell set a career high with four touchdowns and finished with 289 passing yards on 16-of-28 attempts with no interceptions.  Senior wide receiver Jordan Dandridge caught 6 passes for 107 yards and 2 TDs.  Junior wide receiver Tyson Hill added 4 receptions for 101 yards and one score. In addition to the four forced turnovers, Cal recorded five sacks and allowed just 34 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Sophomore defensive lineman Gerald Brown tied for the team lead with five tackles (three solo) and added 2.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble.  After taking a 7-0 lead after one quarter, the Vulcans broke the game open with 28 points in the second quarter to take a 35-0 lead at halftime. Cal would then score on all four of its drives in the third quarter to seize a 58-0 lead after three quarters.

THE COACHES
Wayne Bradford (Salisbury St. '90) was named Edinboro's 15th head coach on March 29, 2017 and led Edinboro to a 7-4 record in his first season. That was followed by a 6-5 finish a year ago, giving Bradford a 13-12 record early in his third season. The 13 wins is tied for the most by an Edinboro head coach in his first two seasons. After serving as interim head coach in 2017, that tag was removed less than a week after the conclusion of the season. With his tenth win as head coach coming against East Stroudsburg last year, Bradford is the fastest coach to reach 10 wins at Edinboro. Bradford has worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots' defensive coordinator, although in 2019 he will move over to the offensive side to oversee the offense. Bradford has master-minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. Two years ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II?in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro's teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9-4 and reached the Super Region One?semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 118 wins.

Gary Dunn (California, Pa. '95) is in his fourth season as the head coach at California(Pa.).  He has an impressive 29-9 record after leading Cal to NCAA playoff appearances two of his first three years. The Vulcans were 11-1 his first season and 9-3 two years ago before posting a 7-4 record last season. His 27 wins in his first three seasons are the most by a Cal coach in his first three years. A former four-year starter for the Vulcans and a veteran offensive coordinator at the FCS level, Dunn spent the previous six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Duquesne following a 13-year stint at Morehead State (Ky.), where he spent the last 11 seasons as offensive coordinator. He played at Cal from 1991-94 before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Vulcans. In 2015, the Dukes finished with an 8-4 overall record and made the program's first appearance in the FCS Playoffs. Dunn helped Duquesne post a winning season five times in his six years with the program, while earning at least a share of three NEC titles (2011, 2013, 2015). While at Morehead State, Dunn served as the offensive coordinator for 11 seasons after spending two seasons as the offensive line and tight ends coach.

THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro ?returns home after two long road trips in the first three weeks of the season, and will also begin PSAC?West action hosting Cal U. The Fighting Scots will play three of the next four weeks at Sox Harrison Stadium, and the other contest is a short trek up I-79 to play at Gannon next week.
  • The Fighting Scots come in with a 0-3 record after last week's 34-14 loss at East Stroudsburg.
They opened the season with a 35-10 loss at then 12th-ranked Grand Valley State, followed by a 24-21 setback to Bloomsburg in the home opener.
  • Cal U (2-1) remains one of the top teams in the top teams in the PSAC?West and features an athletic squad. The Vulcans opened the season with a 59-13 win at Saint Anselm before dropping a 35-28 decision to Kutztown in a matchup of two of the top teams in the PSAC.  They rebounded with an impressive 58-7 thrashing of Shippensburg last week. The Vulcans are among others receiving votes in the latest AFCA Division II?Top 25.
  • The pendulum has swung greatly in the Edinboro-Cal series. The Fighting Scots dominated the series for many years, winning 15 of 17 contests from the 1980's on. But the arrival of john Luckhardt as head coach at Cal signaled a resurgence, and Cal has now won the last 14 meetings to take the lead in the all-time series, 48-35-2.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC?West Coaches Preseason Poll after finishing fourth in the division a year ago with a 3-4 ledger. Cal posted a 7-4 record a year ago and was picked to finish second in the PSAC?West.
  • Edinboro relies on a defense that showcases a talented secondary, despite losing All-Amercan Zuril Hendrick at cornerback. The Fighting Scots, under defensive coordinator Colin Neely, led the PSAC and ranked fifth in Division II in interceptions with 19, along with ranking first in the conference and fourth nationally in turnovers gained. Edinboro led Division II in tackles for losses and ranked third in the PSAC and 21st nationally in sacks.
  • The Fighting Scots return 27 lettermen, including 14 starters -- five on offense, seven on defense, and two special teams specialists.
  • Edinboro must replace three players who left an indelible mark on the record books. Running back Walter Fletcher, the 2018 PSAC?West Offensive Player of the Year, had back-to-back 1,500-yard plus seasons rushing and moved up to third in career rushing in his first three seasons with 3,913 yards and 41 TDs. He decided to transfer to Division I Ball State for his final season. Wide receiver James Clark set the school record for career receptions with 209, while cornerback Zuril Hendrick broke the career record for interceptions with 21.
  • Seven players earned All-PSAC?West accolades in 2018, with two returning. Strong safety Brandon Anderson was named to the All-PSAC?West first team for the second straight year after leading team in tackles for the second straight season with 101. Ta'Nauz Gregory was first team All-PSAC?West selection at wide receiver and is now a two-time All-PSAC?West performer, along with being named the 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. He caught 50 passes for 796 yards and a league-high 10 TDs.
  • After opening the 2019 campaign in Michigan at Grand Valley State, the Bloomsburg game marked the first of ten straight games in Pennsylvania against PSAC teams to wrap up the season.
