Five Fighting Scots Advance to Semifinals of Topper Classic

WEST LIBERTY, WV – The Edinboro men's tennis team opened the 2019 fall portion of its season on Friday, competing in the Topper Tennis Classic. The tournament is hosted by West Liberty. Five Fighting Scots picked up quarterfinal wins in singles play before being eliminated in the semifinals.

Third-year head coach sent out seven players – one sophomore and six freshmen. The event had four singles brackets, with Nils Plutat, the lone sophomore in the group, winning his first match at number one singles before falling in the semifinals, along with freshman Kaio Sacchi. While Plutat lost in straight sets, Sacchi lost a heartbreaking 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 decision.

Freshman Ting-Hao Hsu also reached the semifinals in number two singles, and was also a hard-luck loser. He fell by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Edinboro had two other semifinalists -- both freshmen -- with Chia Chun Chiang winning the first set at number three singles 6-0, only to fall in the next two by scores of 6-4 and 10-6. Jorge Benette suffered a similar fate at number four singles, winning 3-6 in the first set before suffering losses of 6-4 and 10-7.

The Fighting Scots will be back in action on Wednesday, September 11, hosting Daemen at 4 p.m.
