Oliver, Reynolds, and Spaulding Win Decisions in 24-9 Loss to Old Dominion

Dylan Reynolds claimed a 3-2 decision at 197 lbs.
EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team would close its match with Old Dominion on a strong note on Friday night, winning three of the final four matches. The Fighting Scots were unable to overcome a large deficit at the start, however, as the Monarchs son the first six matches on their way to a 24-9 victory in the Mid-American Conference dual. Edinboro is now 9-6 overall and 3-4 in the MAC, while Old Dominion improved to 5-8 and 3-2, respectively.

After Edinboro fell behind 21-0, Jacob Oliver got the Fighting Scots on the board with a 4-1 decision over Alex Cramer (15-13) at 174 lbs. The redshirt sophomore won his eighth straight match to improve to 18-4. He held a 2-1 lead after one period, added an early escape in the second, then rode Cramer out in the third to pick up a riding time point.

Dylan Reynolds and Jon Spaulding ended the night with decisions at 197 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively. Reynolds' first period takedown against Tim Young gave the redshirt senior a 2-1 lead after one period, and an escape made it 3-1 after two. He would give up an escape to Young in the third but was strong the rest of the way to capture a 3-2 decision. Reynolds improved to 15-8.

Spaulding followed with his eighth win in his last nine bouts, a 4-0 decision over Jacob Bullock. The junior, who is now 18-5, controlled the match with a second period escape and a stalling point. He added another stalling point in the third period and owned 1:48 in ridding time.  

The match could have been even closer but ODU was able to register wins in a pair of bouts that went overtime. After Killian Cardinale (17-7), ranked 20th by InterMat, won a 15-5 major decision over Lucas Rodriguez (14-8) to open the match at 125 lbs., Tye Varndell and Shannon Hanna III squared off at 133 lbs.

Vardnell, a true freshman, who fall behind 3-0 in the second period. A second period escape, another in the third, and a stalling point with 26 seconds left sent the match into sudden victory tied at 3-3. Following a scoreless minute of wrestling, Hanna went up 4-3 on a stalling point in the 30-second tiebreaker. Vardnell would pick up a stalling point and an escape for a 5-4 lead, but with one second left Hanna registered the winning takedown for a 6-5 decision. Varndell is now 13-9, with Hanna going to 11-13.

Redshirt freshman Cody Mulligan (14-9) also suffered a heart-breaking loss at 184 lbs. Facing Antonio Agee (15-11), Mulligan and Agee exchanged escapes to start the second and third periods. Mulligan would come close to the winning takedown in the final 10 seconds, but could not finish the shot. The two headed into overtime, and with 13 seconds remaining Agee recorded the winning takedown for a 3-1 decision in sudden victory.

Edinboro returns to action on Sunday, January 26 at tenth-ranked Pittsburgh.
