Edinboro Looks for Strong Showing at PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

LIVE STATS

EDINBORO, Pa.
– Edinboro will serve as the host for the 2020 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, February 29 and Sunday, March 1. Head coach Anne Cleary looks for her team to make a lot of noise at this year's championships. Saturday's competition gets underway at 11 a.m., with Sunday's starting at 11:30 a.m.

A year ago, Edinboro finished ninth out of 15 teams as the meet was condensed to one day. The forecast for high winds for the second day forced conference officials to run everything on Saturday. Kutztown would come away as the 2019 PSAC champions, with Slippery Rock second and Shippensburg third.

With an outstanding group of distance runners from the PSAC and Atlantic Region cross country championship team, Cleary feels her team could challenge for a first-ever PSAC title. She views West Chester as the likely favorite, but like Edinboro, the Golden Rams rely on a smaller group of runners. Cal, Slippery rock, Shippensburg and Kutztown could also jockey for the title. Edinboro's top finish was second in 2013.

The Fighting Scots possess a mixture of strong veterans and promising freshmen. All-American Stefanie Parsons leads the way. The junior earned indoor All-American honors in the one-mile run with a sixth place finish, and enters with the best time in the PSAC and eighth in Division II this year at 4:48.99.

Parsons could compete in as many as three events plus relays, particularly the distance medley relay, where Edinboro owns the 15th-best time in Division II (11:54.69). She also owns the top times in the PSAC in the 800-meter run (2:13.69) and 3,000-meter run (9:41.92). She ranks 12th in Division II in the 3,000 and 24th in the 800.

A year ago, Parsons won the 3,000-meter run. As a freshman, Parsons was the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the one-mile run and finishing third in the 3,000, along with running a leg of the second place distance medley relay.

Hope Pietrocarlo is also a returning PSAC champion, winning the title in the 5,000-meter run last year. Both Parsons and Pietrocarlo earned All-American honors in cross country in the fall. Pietrocarlo currently owns the top time in the PSAC in the event (17:08.97), which is 25th nationally.

She is also third in the 3,000-meter (10:03.04), an event that Cleary feels the Fighting Scots could gain plenty of points. In addition to Parsons and Pietrocarlo,  two other Fighting Scots are in the top – Anna Alberti (10:24.47) and Tori Klimowicz (10:30.38). Klimowicz came in sixth in the 5,000 last year.

Alberti, Kimberly Goerss and Audrey MacPherson also give the Fighting Scots hope for plenty of points in the one-mile run. Alberti has the fifth-best time (5:09.88), Goerss the seventh (5:11.81), and MacPherson a year ago came in third.

Youth is also part of the strength of this year's squad. Alberti and Goerss are two freshman distance runners, along with Aleziah Brooks and Amanda Williams.

Freshman Jayna Galley comes in with the fifth-highest point total in the pentathlon and will also compete in the high jump. Wiltricia Snoh has qualified in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash, and Abigail Piert could impact the relays.
