MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro returns to action with a pair of duals. The first comes against an age-old opponent and like Edinboro, a former member of the Eastern Wrestling League. The second match is against a first-time opponent.  The Fighting Scots head across I-80 to wrestle at Lock Haven on Thursday, February 6.  Two days later, on Saturday, February 6, Edinboro hosts Davidson in a first-ever meeting between the two teams.
  • The Fighting Scots last wrestled in dual competition two weeks ago, dropping a 24-9 decision to Old Dominion on January 24, then two days later suffering a 28-6 loss at 10th-ranked Pittsburgh. That left Edinboro with a 9-7 overall record and 3-4 in Mid-American Conference competition.
  • Earlier this year, the Mid-American Conference announced the addition of the seven Eastern Wrestling League members, including Edinboro, as affiliate members. The move brought the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • Like Edinboro, Lock Haven was one of the EWL squads to move to the MAC. The Bald Eagles are 6-5 overall and have a 2-2 record in the MAC. They own wins over George Mason (25-16) and Bloomsburg (26-12) while losing to Clarion (20-16) and Central Michigan (24-12). Members of the Southern Conference, Davidson has a 3-8 overall record. Edinboro and Davidson have wrestled four common opponents, with Edinboro 3-1 and the Wildcats 1-3 vs. those opponents. Both beat Long Island, both lost to George Mason, while Edinboro defeated VMI and Hofstra, and Davidson lost to both.
  • The Fighting Scots won their first-ever MAC dual, 29-6 over Kent State, and followed that with a 25-7 win over Ohio. They would drop a 21-19 decision to George Mason on December 20, and on January 5, lost to Buffalo, 25-13. Edinboro had a pair of road MAC duals last week, edging Bloomsburg, 19-16, before dropping a 20-12 decision at Rider.
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships.
  • Edinboro is currently ranked seventh in the MAC Coaches Rankings, while Lock Haven is fourth. Three Fighting Scots are ranked in the individual weight class rankings, led by Jon Spaulding. The junior is ranked second at heavyweight and comes in with a 21-7 record.  Jacob Oliver, a redshirt sophomore, is ranked third at 174 lbs. with a 19-4 ledger. Freshman Tye Varndell (13-10) is fifth at 133 lbs. Lock Haven has five wrestlers appearing the latest MAC rankings, led by Luke Werner and DJ Fehlman, who are ranked second at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., respectively. Kyle Shoop is ranked fourth at 141 lbs., as is Corey Hazel at 184 lbs. while Jared Siegrist is fifth at 174 lbs.  Werner is ranked eight nationally by InterMat, while Fehlman is 18th and Shoop 20th.
  • Jacob Oliver has run his winning streak to nine matches, boosting his record to 19-4. The redshirt sophomore is not only ranked number one in the MAC poll at  174 lbs., but has moved into the national rankings. He has climbed to 16th according to InterMat. In addition, he is ranked 14th in FloWrestling's rankings, 15th by TheOpenMat.com, and 18th by Win Magazine.  The redshirt sophomore was named the MAC Eastern Division Wrestler of the Week after winning the championship at 174 lbs. at the Navy Classic. He was Edinboro's lone wrestler to qualify for Nationals a year ago, finishing at 28-7 Spaulding 27th
  • Jon Spaulding recorded his 50th career win against Rider. The junior heavyweight leads Edinboro in wins with a 21-7 record, and comes off a sixth place showing last Saturday in the Edinboro Open. He is ranked 27th in the Win Magazine rankings.
  • The upper weight classes have carried the Fighting Scots of late. In addition to Oliver and Spaulding, Dylan Reynolds is 15-9 at 197 lbs., and Cody Mulligan has a 14-10 record at 184 lbs. Mulligan is a redshirt freshman while Reynolds is a redshirt senior.
  • The NCAA recently released its first set of NCAA division I Wrestling Coaches Rankings, one of the tools used to determine the field for the 2020 NCAA Division I National Championships.  Jacob Oliver was ranked 19th at 174 lbs., while Jon Spaulding was ranked 25th at heavyweight. Lock Haven had Luke Werber ranked 15th at 125 lbs., DJ Fehlman ranked 28th at 133 lbs., Kyle Shoop 20th at 141 lbs., Alex Klucker 29th at 157 lbs., and Jared Siegrist is 32nd at 174 lbs.
  • The Davidson lineup will have a local flavor to it with Gavin Henry of Union City High School slated to start at 184 lbs. The freshman has a 3-2 record.
