Spaulding to Wrestle for Heavyweight Crown as Day One of MAC Championships Wraps Up

DEKALB, Ill. – After a slow start, the Edinboro wrestling team has climbed into 10th place at the end of day one of the 2020 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships. In addition, five Fighting Scots are still alive and will compete on day two, including Jon Spaulding, who has reached the finals at heavyweight. Northern Illinois is hosting the two-day event.

Defending champion Missouri is in first place with 112.5 points, with Central Michigan second with 86 points. Northern Illinois 67.5 is third with Rider fourth at 66.5 points. The Broncs are the highest of the seven former EWL teams that joined the MAC this year. Lock Haven, the last EWL champion, is fifth with 54.5 points. Edinboro has 39 points. A total of 15 teams are competing in the MAC Championships.

The day began with Edinboro advancing six wrestling into the quarterfinals.  However, Spaulding would be the lone Fighting Scot to reach the semifinals.  The junior won his first match of the day, a 10-2 major decision over Spencer Berthhold of Kent State, then used a takedown in sudden victory for a 3-1 decision over Northern Illinois' Max Ihry.

Spaulding, seeded second, met Jordan Earnest of Ohio in the semifinals, recording a 6-2 decision to improve to 27-8 on the season. He will face top-seed Matt Stencel of Central Michigan in Sunday's finals.

Jacob Oliver would come in as the number one seed at 174 lbs., and opened the day with a technical fall over Bloomsburg's Anthony Vetruno, 15-0 (6:31). He would see his 13-match winning streak come to an end in the quarterfinals, as he was upset by Central Michigan's Jake Lowell, 13-5. He came back to post a 4-2 decision over Anthony Lombardo in the consolation bracket, improving to 24-5 on the year. Oliver faces Conner Flynn of Missouri in his next match on Sunday.

Derek Ciavarro (165 lbs.), Cody Mulligan (184 lbs.), and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) also won their first matches before losing in the quarterfinals. All three came back with wins in their first wrestleback match and remain alive.

Ciavarro (13-15) won a 6-5 decision over Tracy Hubbard of Central Michigan. Mulligan, a redshirt freshman, improved 19-12 with a come-from-behind decision over Hunter Yeargan of Ohio. Trailing 9-8, he would knot the match with a penalty point and registered the winning takedown with seconds remaining, prevailing 11-9.

Dylan Reynolds reached 75 career wins on Saturday with a pair of wins, including a 3-2 decision over Kyle Murphy of Bloomsburg in the consolation round. Now 19-12 on the year, his loss was a narrow 3-1 sudden victory setback to second-seed Ethan Laird of Rider.
