Trio of Fighting Scots earn NABC Outstanding Academic Achievement

EDINBORO, Pa. – Three Edinboro University men's basketball student-athletes were recognized this week for academic and athletic achievements for 2019-2020.

On Wednesday, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) recognized Alex Jay (pictured), Daylon Harris and Alec Ferrari – all Health & Physical Education majors – with positions on the 2019-2020 NABC Honors Court. This distinction recognizes more than 1,350 men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season.

The NABC Honors Court highlights the talents and gifts that these student-athletes possess on the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.

"To see the names of three Edinboro basketball student-athletes on this list of academic honors is incredible, but not surprising," said Pat Cleary, head men's basketball coach at Edinboro. "Alex, Daylon and Alec prove to me in practice that they have the tenacity to excel on the court and the intelligence to maintain high academic standards."

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows – academically a junior or senior and a varsity player, cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year and have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.

During the 2019-2020 season that was impacted by COVID-19, Harris scored a season high 19 points against Shepherd on Nov. 23. He also hit a career-high four 3-pointers on Jan. 11 against Cal.

A defensive standout for the Fighting Scots, Jay recorded season highs in steals (2) on Jan. 17 against Clarion and blocks (3) against Lake Erie on Dec. 1. During that game, he also scored 17 points for Edinboro.

Ferrari's biggest game of the 2019-2020 season came against Mercyhurst on Feb. 20, when the senior scored 8 points on 3-of-5 shooting, hitting 2-of-3 3-pointers.

The largest professional association of basketball coaches, the NABC currently claims a membership of nearly 5,000 men's basketball coaches throughout the ranks of the NCAA, NAIA, junior and community colleges and high school. Active memberships are available for NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA head coaches and full-time assistants.
