TEN | RECAP | Fighting Scots conclude weekend at PSAC Championships

BLOOMSBURG, PA – Members of the Edinboro Men's and Women's Tennis teams competed this past weekend at the 2021 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships at Bloomsburg University. 

On the men's side Edinboro was led by Bruno Sabio, who was crowned PSAC champion in the singles tournament.  

The second seed Sabio started off by defeating Bloomsburg's Oliver Weisemann 6-2, 6-2, in the first round. The quarterfinals match up with Frank Yanni of Millersville was also in favor of Sabio 6-7, 6-1, 10-5. This set up a semifinal match up with Edinboro teammate Ruben Acuna. The two Fighting Scots had a great battle that concluded with Bruno Sabio winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-5. Sabio advanced to the final round of the tournament where he defeated the number one seed Carlos Martinez from Millersville 6-3, 6-4. 

Gustavo Martins and Acuna also competed in the men's singles tournament for Edinboro. 

Martins made it out of the first round with a victory over Mercyhurst's Hristo Plasheski 6-2, 6-1. Martins was eventually eliminated in the quarterfinals when he fell to Mercyhurst's David Akinpetide 6-1, 6-3. The third seed, Acuna started his run in the tournament by defeating Kutztown's Gonzalo Barcelo 6-1, 6-3. In the quarterfinals Acuna was able to get past Mercyhurt's Milan Jankovic 5-7, 6-2, 10-7. This brought Acuna to semifinal round where he fell to his Edinboro teammate Sabio 6-4, 4-6, 10-5. 

In the men's doubles tournament Sabio made another deep run with freshman teammate Rocco Palombarini. The duo started out the tournament by taking down the number one seed from Mercyhurst's Jankovic/Akinpetide 8-6. In the second round Palombarini and Sabio defeated Bloomsburg's Jaunmarti/Clary 8-6. In the championship round Palombarini and Sabio fell to the second seed, Yanni/Martinez from Millersville 8-6. 

On the women's side, Edinboro was led by Vidisha Pallamreddy in the singles tournament.  

Pallamreddy started out the tournament by defeating Seton Hill's Cameron Beer 6-0, 6-1 in a dominate fashion. This set up a second round match up against the third seed Katy Gordon of Indiana (Pa.), who was able to end Pallamreddy's run with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. 

Anisha Thada also competed in the singles tournament for the women. Thada was eliminated in the first round by Bloomsburg's Rea Hagishima 6-2, 6-0. 

In the women's doubles tournament Rafaella De Negrao Almeida and Marina Zottele were victorious in the first round when they defeated Frushour/Burner from Shepherd 8-1. In the second round the duo of Negrao De Almeida and Zottele fell to the number one seed, Kirchtag/Graydon from IUP 8-3. 

The Edinboro women's team will be back in action on Oct. 8. when they host Shippensburg University at 4 p.m. The men's team will remain idle until February, 2022.
