Softball squares off with Clarion in four game weekend set

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Fighting Scots softball team will face the Clarion Golden Eagles four times on the weekend in PSAC West action. Edinboro currently holds a 9-12 overall record with Clarion holding onto an 11-17 overall record with a 7-15 mark in conference.

The team last competed on Sunday, April 18 in a doubleheader vs. the Crimson Hawks of IUP. In those contests, the Fighting Scots were able to split with the IUP, winning the first game of the doubleheader. 

Clarion comes in a winner of their last contest against the Griffins of Seton Hill and feature five hitters hitting over .300 on the season. Rebecca Kelly, Makenzie Wolfe, Brooke Cline, Hannah Norton, Alyssa Stitt, and Carissa Giordano have swung hot bats for the Golden Eagles this season. In the circle, Chelsea Liroff, Megan Anderson, and Laura Sadowski have done a bulk of the pitching for Clarion in 2021 with Liroff and Sadowski holding winning record at 3-2 each.

As for the Fighting Scots, their offense features three qualified hitters over .300 with two more swinging a consistent bat throughout the season. First-year Maura Pasquale (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) has been one the PSAC's most feared hitters as the shortstop is hitting .466 on the year, good for fifth place in the PSAC. Her .767 slugging percentage ranks fourth in the conference, while her 0.506 on-base percentage is good for for seventh in the PSAC.

Cheyenne Shughart (Shermandsdale, PA/West Perry) has been a consistent hitter in the middle part of the Fighting Scots lineup in her second collegiate season. She is currently hitting .393 and has the team lead in home runs with five and is tied for the club lead in doubles with four. 

Grad student Lauren Gierlak (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) has set the table well in the lead-off spot this season and is hitting .315 on the year. She leads the team with 14 stolen bases and also ranks first in runs scored with 15. Gierlak also ranks third on the team in hits with 23.

Fellow graduate student Jolene Teller (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia/Mercyhurst) has returned from injury and has continued to produce in the middle part of the order for Edinboro. She is hitting .357 with 15 hits and 12 RBI's in fourteen games. Mackenzie Quider (Sanborn, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) has also been a strong hitter this season for the Fighting Scots and has added 18 hits and 10 RBI's in 16 games while hitting .360.

Macy Sral (Lilly, PA/Penn Cambria) has been the team's ace with Lauren Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) coming on strong throughout the season as the typical game two starter. Sral is 6-4 on the season with Bush picking up three victories so far in her collegiate career.
