Men's tennis set for Atlantic Region match vs. Bluefield State

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Fighting Scots men's tennis team is back in action this weekend and will look to next capture an Atlantic Region title after being crowned PSAC Champions on Friday, April 30 with a 4-2 come from behind victory over the Lakers of Mercyhurst. Edinboro is set to square off with Bluefield State College on Saturday, May 8 at 4:00 p.m. in Charleston, West Virginia.

The entire Atlantic Region Tournament is being hosted by the University of Charleston (WV) at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts with Charleston picking up the number one overall seed. They will be taking on West Virginia Wesleyan who has been selected as the number four seed. The winners from the two matches will play on Sunday, May 9 at 1:00 p.m. for the right to be crowned champions of the region.

Bluefield State is 9-6 in 2021 and 3-1 in matches played at a neutral site. The Big Blue has also won two straight matches heading into the showdown with the Fighting Scots. These two programs have met before and most recently squared off back in May of 2015 with the Big Blue coming out on top.

The Big Blue has had quite a lay off and has not had a match since April 17 as their season finale set for April 24 against Mercyhurst was canceled. Bluefield State does not belong to a conference, but nonetheless was awarded an automatic bid to the Atlantic Region Tournament after a strong regular season. They were selected as the number two seed in the Atlantic Region with the Fighting Scots being tabbed as the the number three seed.

The Fighting Scots are 10-4 on the season and are coming off their biggest win of the year as they avenged a loss to Mercyhurst earlier in the season. Ruben Acuna (Palma De Mallorca, Spain/Aula Balear) has won five straight singles contests coming into the weekend and will look to make it six in a row. Gustavo Martins (Sao Carlos, Brazil) has proven to be one of the bright first-years in the entire PSAC and has yet to be defeated in singles competition in his collegiate career. Kaio Sacchi (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Santo Ivo) is also playing some excellent tennis down the stretch and sealed the PSAC title with a singles victory in the number five spot for the Fighting Scots.

As Head Tennis Coach Kody Duncan emphasized in the PSAC Tournament, winning two out of three doubles matches will serve the team well and will take some pressure off as they begin singles play. This will be one of the keys as Edinboro continues their 2021 campaign in the Atlantic Region/NCAA Tournament.
