Bloomsburg, Pa.-- The Edinboro men's tennis team completed their dominant weekend at the 2022 PSAC Individual Championships. Edinboro's Bruno Sabio won his second consecutive singles title and Edinboro's Rocco Palombarini and Sabio won the doubles title.
Singles Bracket
Sabio earned another singles title as he was crowned the best among the entire PSAC conference. The number one overall seed went on to post a (4-0) record.
Sabio wasn't the only one who displayed greatness for Edinboro. The Scots were featuring three players in the singles bracket including Ruben Acuna and Gustavo Martins. In the semifinals round Edinboro made up three of the four remaining players at that point. After they both earned two wins in the earlier rounds, teammates Acuna and Martins were forced to compete against each other.
In the semifinals round Acuna would get the best of his teammate, as he defeated Martins 6-4, 7-6.
Martins' path to the semifinals was impressive as he knocked out Bloomsburg's top two performers in the round of sixteen and quarterfinals.
Acuna's path to the semifinals was similar to Martins. Instead, Acuna took out Kutztown's top two performers in the round of sixteen and quarterfinals.
In Sabio's first three rounds he defeated competitors from West Chester, Shepherd and then Mercyhurst's Hristo Plasheski in the semifinals to move onto the final.
In the final it was the first seed vs the second seed in Sabio and Acuna. There wasn't their first matchup outside of practice. The two competed in last year's PSAC Individual Championships during the semifinal round, where Sabio prevailed and went on to earn a singles championship.
In this year's final Sabio would slightly edge his teammate 8-5 as the rest of the conference could only watch.
Doubles Bracket
In the doubles bracket Edinboro would feature two teams. Bruno Sabio and Rocco Palombarini were selected as the one seed, as well as Thibault Dorval and Manav Sreekumar.
Both teams jumped out to hot starts in the early rounds. Sabio/Palombarini knocked out the duo from West Chester 8-4 in round one. Then in round two they defeated a team from Bloomsburg 8-5.
Sreekumar/Dorval took out the duo from Shepherd 8-3 in round one. In round two Sreekumar/Dorval dominated the second seed team and last year's champion from Millersville in Frank Yanni and Dylan Tull 8-2.
The third and final round of doubles was set and it featured two teams from Edinboro. Top ranked Sabio/Palombarini vs Sreekumar/Dorval. In a close battle Sabio/Palombarini eventually would prevail over their teammates 8-6. The 2022 doubles champions would avenge their 2021 loss in the final.
