Edinboro, Pa – The Edinboro men's tennis team (4-0), will have a showdown with Mercyhurst (4-0) on Saturday at 4 p.m. to decide who will claim the top of the PSAC standings. The Fighting Scots go into the weekend owning the top over the Lakers due to overall record consideration. The Fighting Scots are (10-5) overall, as are the Lakers (8-8) overall.
Statistical Leaders
With fifteen matches completed and only two to go, the Fighting Scots are beginning to heat up as they have won five straight matches. On Tuesday the NCAA's Atlantic Region rankings had Edinboro in second, only trailing top seeded University of Charleston.
Ruben Acuna leads the Scots in Singles play with a (14-1) record while winning nine of his last ten matches. Acuna was named PSAC West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week back in March.
Acuna is followed by Thibault Dorval who was also recently selected as the PSAC Tennis Athlete of the Week. Dorval holds an (9-4) singles record on the season.
The fire power continues with Bruno Sabio and Gustavo Martins who are both (10-5) in Singles. Sabio currently owns the longest winning streak on the team with Sabio straight victories.
Sabio was named Rebich Investments Scot of the Week on Monday for his recent performance.
In doubles, the duo of Acuna and Kaio Sacchi are (10-1) on the season.
Dorval and Maksymilian Braziewicz have also been dominant with their (10-2) record together.
Last Time Out
In their previous match last Friday, Edinboro won their fifth in a row as they defeated Bloomsburg 6-1. Edinboro stuck to their strategy that has worked all season and that is gaining momentum early in doubles. The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches.
In doubles the duo Bruno Sabio and Rocco Palombarini won a close match over Robin Luetzig and Albert Martin 7-5. Thibault Dorval and Maksymilian Braziewicz cruised past Fernando Barros and Vishesh Patel 6-2. Ruben Acuna and Kaio Sacchi picked up their tenth doubles victory when they defeated Scott Redmond and Oliver Wiesemann 6-2.
As singles begun, Edinboro turned up the pressure and ultimately won five out six matches. Bruno Sabio won his sixth straight match as he defeated Luetzig 6-1, 6-4. Acuna added in his fifth straight match win when got past Martin 6-2, 6-1. Gustavo Martins, who did not compete in doubles, was dominant in his win over Barros 6-3, 6-2.
Dorval was taken to a third set as he eventually put away Patel 5-7, 6-2, 10-5. Braziewicz went to a third set as well and was victorious when he defeated Wiesemann 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Mercyhurst Scouting Report
Mercyhurst is a member of the PSAC conference out of the Atlantic Region. The Lakers currently hold an (8-8) overall record and are (4-0) in conference play. Mercyhurst sits in second place in the PSAC and has won six out of seven matches as of late. In their recent match, Mercyhurst swept Kutztown University 7-0. Mercyhurst is led by Morris Max Haab who has not dropped a singles match since February.
