Bloomsburg, Pa.-- The Edinboro men's tennis team concluded a long weekend at Bloomsburg University for the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships. The duo Bruno Sabio and Rocco Palombarini made the biggest splash for the Scots in Open Doubles. Sabio and Palombarini made it to the fifth and final round before falling to the University of Charleston.
Men's Open Singles
Sabio entered the weekend as the number one ranked player in the Singles bracket. In the opening round of 64, Sabio was upset by Marcelo Pinto from the University of Charleston 0-6, 6-7.
Ruben Acuna earned the second overall seed in the singles bracket. Acuna caught great momentum early in the weekend as he won four matches in a row. During his run, Acuna defeated Kan Watanabe from Fairmont State 6-4, 6-1 in round one. Next, he took out Taiki Umeda from Davis & Elkins 6-4, 6-4.
In the round of sixteen, Acuna defeated Noha De Sousa Pereira from Mercyhurst 6-3, (retired, injury). Acuna's last win came in the quarterfinals over Farhaan Patrawala of Charleston 6-0, 6-2. Acuna was a match short of the final after he fell to Vikor Yanev of Davis & Elkins 7-5, 5-6, (8-10).
Gustavo Martins remained poised and earned three strong match wins in the open singles bracket. In round one Martins defeated Seena Saadevandi 7-5, 5-7, (11-9). In the next two rounds Martins took out Jose Marquez from Bluefield State 6-3, 6-4, and Ben Davis from Mercyhurst 6-2, 6-2. In the quarterfinals Martins eventually was defeated by Jorge Perez from the University of Charleston 1-6, 4-6.
Thibault Dorval was another Fighting Scot who earned wins in the open singles bracket. Dorval defeated Paulo Gutierrez from West Virginia State 6-2, 6-1, and Hristo Plasheski from Mercyhurst 6-2, 6-1. In the round of sixteen, Dorval fell to Fabian David Avila Torres 6-4, 3-6, (6-10).
Manav Sreekumar earned a win in the opening round over Elias Valencia of West Virgina State 6-3, 6-1. In the next round Sreekumar fell to Jorge Perez in a tiebreaker 6-4, 2-6, (7-10).
Finn Unger earned a match win in round one over Nevio Dux of West Liberty in a tiebreaker 2-6, 6-2, (10-8). In the next round Unger fell to Krish Patel from the University of Charleston 2-6, 4-6.
Men's Open Doubles
Bruno Sabio and Rocco Palombarini put together an impressive run in the open doubles bracket that was cut short in the final round. The duo opened up the weekend by defeating West Chester University 7-5. In the round of sixteen, Palombarini and Sabio took out West Virginia State University 6-3.
In the quarterfinals it was more of the same, as the duo defeated a team from the University of Charleston 7-6. In the semifinals Sabio and Palombarini punched their ticket for the final with a 6-3 match win over Davis & Elkins College. In the final round Edinboro's magnificent duo fell to Jowan Rawson and Lennert Stevens from the University of Charleston 3-6, 1-6.
Edinboro's other team in the open doubles bracket consisted of Thibault Dorval and Manav Sreekumar. The duo fell to Lukas Cabue and Juan Carlos Hernandez Briones from Mercyhurst 4-6.
The men will be back in action this Friday when they travel to Carnegie Mellon University.
