Edinboro, Pa. -- The Edinboro men's tennis team will begin conference play this weekend with back-to-back home matches. The Scots will host Kutztown on Saturday and Bloomsburg on Sunday with both matches beginning at 4 p.m.
Spring Break Trip
Last time the Edinboro men were in action was during spring break when they traveled south as they competed in four matches in five days.
The Scots went head-to-head with some of the most talented programs at both the division I and division II level.
Edinboro concluded the trip with an even (2-2) record after earning wins over division I Queens University of Charlotte and Division II nationally ranked Belmont Abbey College.
Promising Start
The Edinboro men have lived up to expectations in what is still a young season for the Scots. Their (7-3) nonconference record puts them at the top of the conference standings as PSAC play begins. Edinboro also has the upper hand with experience, as no other team in the conference has played in as many matches.
This past week Edinboro was recognized for their outstanding play as they landed in the ITA national poll. The Scots earned the 39th spot in the country at the NCAA division II level.
Home Court Advantage
Edinboro opens up conference play in a comfortable spot at home. So far this season the Scots are unbeaten when they host a match, with a (5-0) home record.
Whether it is the indoor Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pennsylvania or the newly refurbished tennis courts on campus, Edinboro has yet to drop a match.
The Scots ironically will play their next six matches at home before going on the road in mid-April.
Singles
In singles the Scots are led by reigning PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week in Ruben Acuna. Acuna has a team best (9-1) record in singles play and has won six consecutive matches.
Acuna is followed by three of his teammates in Gustavo Martins, Thibault Dorval and Finn Unger who all have earned six wins in singles.
Doubles
The experienced duo of Acuna and Kaio Sacchi have obtained Edinboro's best record in doubles at (7-3).
Behind them is the reigning doubles champion from the PSAC Individual Championships this fall in Bruno Sabio and Rocco Palombarini. Sabio and Palombarini currently hold a (6-4) record in doubles.
Kutztown
The Bears of Kutztown University are led by head coach Wyatt Pauley and sit in second place of the conference standings with a (4-3) non-conference record. In their last match, the Bears defeated Moravian 5-1.
Edinboro has won their last ten matches in the head-to-head battle with Kutztown. Last season their match was cancelled due to the weather.
The two teams have both competed against one team so far this season in Daemen College. Against Daemen, Edinboro prevailed in a dominant 7-0 win, as Kutztown fell to Daemen 0-7.
Emmitt Robinson leads Kutztown in singles with a team best (5-2) record. Their #1 singles player in Gonzalo Barcelo follows Robinson with a (4-2) record in singles.
Bloomsburg
The Huskies of Bloomsburg University are led by head coach Rebecca Helt and sit in sixth place of the conference standings with a (0-3) non-conference record. In their last match, the Huskies fell to West Liberty University 1-6.
Edinboro has won eleven straight matches against Bloomsburg including two wins last season, with one coming in the PSAC Semifinals.
Up Next
After this weekend's action the Edinboro men will be back next weekend when they host Shepherd University and Fairmont State University, as their homestand continues.
