Volleyball Prepares for Homecoming PSAC Crossover Weekend

Season Statistics

EDINBORO, Pa. – An improved Edinboro squad prepares to face three PSAC East foes this weekend, beginning with West Chester Friday night, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. and finishing with Cheyney and Kutztown Saturday, Oct. 6 at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.  The matches are part of the festivities for Homecoming weekend.

The tale of the 2012 Edinboro volleyball squad has been one of two halves.  After starting the season 0-8, the Fighting Scots have gone 5-4 in their last nine matches, including wins over PSAC opponents Millersville, Shippensburg, and a big 3-0 sweep over Indiana (Pa.) last Friday.  Two of the four losses have come in the deciding fifth set, pushing opponents into overtime, past the 15-point mark.  On Saturday afternoon, Edinboro took the first set from California (Pa.) 25-19, marking only the third set that the Vulcans have lost in their last ten matches.

Statistically, the Fighting Scots have improved in every facet of the game.  The play of sophomore Tabitha Meeks and freshman Marah Maycock have sparked the improvement offensively.  Meeks has totaled 106 of her 168 kills and Maycock 99 of her 160 total kills in the past nine matches.  Over the first eight games, the team managed 237 kills.  Over the past nine, they have drastically improved to 433 kills and a .172 hitting percentage compared to a .018 during the slump.

The duo in charge of setting up the offense has been freshman Katie Felix and junior Erin Schatzle, a junior college transfer from Owens Community College.  Felix has increased to 207 assists in 34 sets compared to 105 in 27 sets over the first eight matches.  Schatzle has gone from 71 assists in 20 sets to 135 in 31 sets.

Good offense doesn't happen without a good defense.  Edinboro has dropped from 47 receiving errors in the first eight matches to 30 over the past nine.  The number of digs has also increased for the team, especially from sophomore libero Haley Marett, who has 191, compared 103 during the 0-8 stretch.  As a team, the digs have increased to 571 from 379 in just eleven more sets.  Blocking has also been an improved area, going from 42.5 blocks in 27 sets over the first eight matches to 56.0 in 38 sets over the past nine.  Freshman Maria Concheck has been a force at the net throughout the season, amassing 50 blocks.

West Chester travels to Edinboro with a 10-10 record, including a 1-5 conference record.  They have lost five of their last six games, including a 3-1 loss at the hands of IUP.  Cheyney enters at 0-13 and 0-7 in the conference.  The Wolves have a pair of games against Gannon and Mercyhurst Friday, Oct. 5 before coming to Edinboro.  Kutztown comes in at 8-10 and 0-6 in the conference.  The Golden Bears have dropped seven in a row and also play Gannon and Mercyhurst Friday Oct. 5 prior to Saturday's match.

After the trio of home matches, the Fighting Scots hit the road to Daemen Oct. 9, and Gannon Oct. 12 before returning home Saturday, Oct. 13 to face Mercyhurst.
