EDINBORO, Pa. (Nov. 24, 2012) – Senior
Samantha Blazetic became the 26th player in Edinboro history to surpass 1,000 career points as No. 15 Edinboro held off a valiant effort from upset-minded Wayne State to come away with a 77-74 victory in its home opener on Saturday afternoon.
Wayne State's Brittany Streetman heaved a 3-pointer that would have tied the game as time expired, but Edinboro's
Kiara Brown was able to tip the shot attempt that fell short at the buzzer.
The Fighting Scots improve to 2-1 on the year while the Warriors drop to 0-2.
Blazetic led Edinboro with 21 points and seven rebounds, also adding four blocks. The Eastlake, Ohio native currently has 1,012 career points and moves into 25th all-time on the Fighting Scots scoring list.
Two other Fighting Scots finished in double figures as Brown tallied a season-high 15 points to go along with four assists while
Kerry Connolly also reached season-bests with 10 points and six assists.
The two squads exchanged three lead changes and six ties, but it was the Warriors who jumped out in the early going. Wayne State scored the game's first points on a layup from Kristen Long and did not trail for nearly seven minutes to begin the contest. Edinboro took its first lead on a jumper from Brown for a 13-11 advantage with 12:33 to play in the opening stanza. Brown's basket came as part of a 15-4 sprint by the Boro to take command for the first time.
Blazetic hit her career milestone by sinking two shots from the free throw line with 35 seconds left in the opening half to reach 1,000 career points.
After Wayne State pulled to within five at 35-30 with 3:54 left, Edinboro grabbed the momentum heading into the break by stretching the lead into double digits for the first time as Aignee Freeland sank a pair of free throws at the end of the half to send the Boro into intermission with a 44-34 edge.
Edinboro was able to keep its lead near double digits for the first 10 minutes of the final period before Wayne State began chipping away. The Warriors broke out for an 18-9 run over a six-minute span to erase the deficit and take its first lead of the second half at 68-67 following a three-point play from Juanita Cochran with 4:55 to play.
It would be the final lead for Wayne State, however. On their next possession, Edinboro recaptured the advantage on a jumper in the lane from Blazetic for a 69-68 score. Wayne State refused to falter as with the Warriors trailing by a bucket, Talisha Bridges sank both shots from the line for the game's sixth tie (71-71) with 3:06 on the clock.
A hard foul on the other end sent Brown to the line and her two free throws gave Edinboro a 73-71 lead. The Scots stretched their edge to six with 1:04 left, but after Bridges made her first attempt at the line and missed the second, Phaebre Colbert was able to make the put-back to cut the lead to three with 39 seconds remaining.
Wayne State came up with a defensive stop on the next possession and was able to wrestle away a loose ball. The Warriors called time out with three seconds left to set up a play before Streetman's three came up short at the buzzer.
Paige Sickmiller led all scorers with 22 points for Wayne State while Colbert added 18 points.
Laurel Lindsay added nine points and three assists for Edinboro and
Katie Collins recorded eight points and two assists off the bench.
The Fighting Scots begin their PSAC schedule on Dec. 1 with a road crossover beginning at Mansfield before a Dec. 2 date at Bloomsburg in a re-match of last year's conference championship game.
