The Game Story
-Edinboro snapped a three-game losing streak with a 48-13 win at Clarion last Saturday. The Fighting Scots not only scored a season-high 48 points, but kept alive their hopes for a non-losing season. They come in with a 4-5 record, and finished with a 3-4 ledger in the PSAC West. Edinboro has not had a losing season since 2002, with nine straight winning campaigns.
-Kutztown had an unexpected bye last week, as Hurricane Sandy forced the postponement of the Golden Bears' game with LIU Post. That game will now be played on November 17. The Golden Bears won their first-ever PSAC championship a year ago and then picked up their first-ever NCAA playoff win, eventually finishing the year at 11-2. They were the unanimous preseason favorite to repeat as PSAC?Eastern Division champions, but come into the game with a 5-4 overall record and 3-3 in the PSAC East.

-Edinboro holds a 5-2 lead in the series, winning the last four meetings. The teams last met in 2007, with the Fighting Scots claiming a 35-28 win at Kutztown. The teams first met in 1988.
-Three of Edinboro's five losses have come to nationally-ranked teams. The Scots lost to then-19th ranked Bloomsburg, 30-14, the opening week of the season, followed by a 24-14 loss to sixth-ranked California (Pa.) the following week. A month ago 22nd-ranked IUP handed the Boro a 26-10 defeat. The combined record of the five teams Edinboro has lost to is 39-11.
-The Fighting Scots have played two overtime games this year. In addition to the loss at recent 38-31 overtime loss at Slippery Rock, Edinboro won a 31-24 decision at LIU Post in overtime.
-Edinboro is completing its seventh season under head coach
Scott Browning. The former long-time Boro assistant has led the Fighting Scots to a 49-28 record during that period, and tied mentor Tom Hollman for the most wins by a coach in his first six seasons. A year ago Edinboro finished with a 7-4 record for the second straight season.
-The Fighting Scots were picked to finish fourth in the PSAC West preseason poll, while Clarion was voted seventh by the coaches.
-Edinboro must contend with one of the top offenses in the country in Kutztown and its standout quarterback Kevin Morton. The Golden Bears have scored 40-or-more points six times, and the only tem to hold them under 35 points is West Chester. Kutztown ranks secodn in the PSAC and third nationally in scoring offense (47.67 ppg.), is second in the PSAC and sixth in Division II in passing offense (367.44 ypg.), and second in the PSAC and fourth nationally in total offense (506.56 ypg.). However, the Golden Bears have struggled defensively, allowing 30-or-more points in six games. Oddly enough, in their other three games they gave up just a combined 16 points. Kutztown ranks 14th in the PSAC in scoring defense (34.22 ppg.) and 11th in total defense (424.22 ypg.).

-The Edinboro-Kutztown game can be heard live on WFSE FM 88.9, with Mike Telek providing the play-by-play and Jason Hoffman the color commentary. In addition, ETV will stream the game live and will televise it.

The Last Meeting

Trevor Harris accounted for four touchdowns to lead the Fighting Scots to victory at Kutztown. Edinboro rallied from a 14-0 deficit, outscoring the Golden Bears 35-7 at one point. Kutztown closed the gap to 35-28 with a touchdown with 62 seconds remaining, and the Golden Bears recovered the ensuing onside kickoff. They would drive down to the Boro 14 before a Dan Skelton interception with seven seconds remaining clinched the victory. Harris completed 22 of 28 passes for 316 yards and 3 TDs, adding 60 yards rushing on 14 carries with another touchdown. Kyle Witucki caught 6 passes for 91 yards and a TD. KU?quarterback Kyle Spotts completed 22 of 46 passes for 253 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs, and had 56 yards rushing. Dontay Wilson ran for 147 yards on 16 carries. The Coaches
-
Scott Browning (Ohio State '81) took over as Edinboro's 13th head coach on January 5, 2006, and in his first six seasons he tied the record for most wins by a coach during that period. Browning is now in his seventh season with a 49-28 record, tying former mentor Tom Hollman for most wins in the first six seasons. He was certainly no stranger to Fighting Scot football, however, serving as an assistant coach for the previous twenty years. While at Edinboro he has coached the offensive linemen, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator. Browning became the first head coach at Edinboro to debut with a win since Bill McDonald in 1969 when the Fighting Scots opened the 2006 season with a 28-14 win at West Chester. He went on to lead Edinboro to a 6-5 finish, the most wins ever by a first-year coach. That was followed by a 7-4 finish in 2007. His next two Fighting Scot editions recorded a school-record tying nine wins. in 2008 Edinboro ended the year at 9-2 and was ranked 20th in the final AFCA Top 25. The Fighting Scots had a 9-4 record in 2009, making the NCAA playoffs for the first time in his tenure. Edinboro would end the year 24th in the AFCA poll. The Boro has posted back-to-back 7-4 finishes in 2010 and 2011.
-Raymond Monica (North Alabama '90) is concluding his seventh season as the head coach at Kutztown. During that period he has compiled a 43-34 record, tying him for second all-time in career wins at Kutztown. He led the Golden Bears to a school-record 11 wins in 2011, after they won 10 games the year before. In addition, KU won its first-ever PSAC championship a year ago with a 21-14 win over Slippery Rock. A week later the Golden Bears won their first-ever NCAA playoff game, 17-14 over Concord. Monica took over as Kutztown's head coach after seving as the defensive coordinator at Temple for eight years. He was also an assistant coach at his alma mater, North Alabama, taking part in three Division II?national Championships (1993, '94, '95).

Cody Harris threw five touchdown passes and ran for a sixth to lead the Fighting Scots to the road victory. Tied at 7-7 after one quarter, Edinboro struck for 20 points in the second quarter and ran off 34 straight points in all. Harris' five TD passes tied the school record and went to five different receivers, covering 28 yards to
Kevin Sonnie, 62 yards to
Marcus Johnson, three yards to
Shawn Walker, 11 yards to
Ben Eisel, and 59 yards to
Devin Ghafoor. Harris threw for 460 yards, the second-highest single-game figure. Harris also scored on a five yard run, and freshman
Jeremy Donaldson accounted for the seventh touchdown on a three yard run.
-Kutztown bye -- the Golden Bears were scheduled to play LIU Post this past weekend, but were forced to postpone the game until November 17 due to Hurricane Sandy.
