GLENVILLE, W. Va. (Nov. 9, 2012) – Six Fighting Scots scored in double figures as the sixth-ranked Edinboro women's basketball team made an auspicious season debut by sailing to a 90-71 victory over West Liberty on Friday evening at the Glenville State Classic.
Junior
Darche' Jackson led the balanced attack by recording a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes on the court. Redshirt sophomore
Laurel Lindsay, playing in her first official game after missing all of last season with an ACL injury, tallied 16 points and five boards. All five Fighting Scots starters found double figures as seniors
Kiara Brown (13 points) and
Samantha Blazetic (12) each had strong nights and freshman
Bobbi Baker made her debut with 10 points and four rebounds. Another freshman, Aignee Freeland also tallied 10 points in nine minutes off the bench in her first action in red and white.
West Liberty (0-1) led for the first three and a half minutes of play before a pair of free throws from Baker gave Edinboro (1-0) a one point advantage at 8-7. The Hilltoppers and Fighting Scots then exchanged layups, with the latter coming on a score from Brown to allow Edinboro to take the 10-9 edge. The Scots would never again trail.
After Edinboro pulled ahead by seven at 35-28 with 3:25 left in the first half, the Hilltoppers pulled to within just a point at 37-36 as 1:36 remained on the clock. Edinboro then went on a 7-0 run to end the first period and take a 44-36 edge into intermission. Jackson gave Boro the momentum, scoring all of her 17 points during the opening half of play, including the last six points of the period to allow Edinboro breathing room at the break.
The score remained close for the opening portion of the second half as West Liberty whittled the Boro lead to four on a layup from Meghan Wiseman with 15:12 remaining. Edinboro reeled off the next six points to stretch its lead to double digits for the first time, however.
The Hilltoppers had one last mini surge remaining, cutting their deficit to seven at 64-57 with 9:54 to play. Edinboro broke the game wide open, though, by exploding for a 19-2 sprint over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.
Edinboro's defense forced 17 Hilltopper turnovers which resulted in 29 points of offense on the other end for the Boro. West Liberty could muster just 35 percent shooting from the field (22-for-63) during the game while Edinboro shot at a 49 percent clip (35-72), including a scalding 53 percent (17-32) during the second half.
