No. 15 Edinboro Soars To 91-61 Victory at Mansfield to Open PSAC Play

MANSFIELD, Pa. (Dec. 1, 2012) – Samantha Blazetic poured in a career-high 27 points to lead 15th-ranked Edinboro to a 91-61 victory at Mansfield in the Fighting Scots conference-opener on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, Edinboro improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC while Mansfield falls to 1-2, 0-1.
 
Blazetic shot 13 of 19 from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds to complete her second double-double of the young season, adding two blocks and two steals in just 29 minutes on the floor. Blazetic's play was a key part of Edinboro's domination inside as the Scots outscored Mansfield in the paint, 40-14.
 
Darche' Jackson added 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the floor, seven assists and three steals off the bench while Kerry Connolly turned in 11 points, career-best four steals and three assists.
 
Edinboro began the game on a 9-4 advantage and never trailed during the contest.
                                                            
The Fighting Scots completely altered the momentum with a game-changing blitz late in the first half. Hanging on to a seven-point lead, 28-21, Edinboro doubled its edge in just 40 seconds. Kerry Connolly drained a 3-point jumper and Bobbi Baker quickly recorded a steal which resulted in a layup from Jackson. Laurel Lindsay stole another pass away from the Mounties and dished again to Jackson for another easy lay-in to make the score 35-21 in nearly the blink of an eye.
 
Blazetic and Jackson accounted for 28 of Edinboro's 46 first half points as the Scots took a 13-point lead into halftime.
 
Kiara Brown set the tone for the second half with a pull-up jumper for her first points of the game to push the lead to 15 (50-35) at the outset of the final period.
 
Edinboro put the game on ice with a 16-4 sprint early in the second half as a stifling defensive attack from the Scots forced five Mansfield turnovers in less than four minutes to key the run. Brown capped off the run with a jumper to push the lead to 72-45 with 11 minutes on the clock. Edinboro would stretch its lead as much as 34 points (83-49) following a layup from Blazetic with 6:50 left in the game.
 
The Edinboro defense forced Mansfield into 31 turnovers during the afternoon which resulted in 39 points on the opposite end for the Scots. Edinboro was able to shoot a season-best 49 percent (39 of 80) from the floor and hit 9 of 11 attempts at the line.
 
Freshman Aignee Freeland added nine points and nine rebounds in 14 minutes of action off the bench for Edinboro. Brown finished with eight points and five steals.
 
Kayla Espigh led Mansfield with 13 points and Julia Stevenson tallied 11 points.
 
The Fighting Scots return to action in a re-match of last year's PSAC Championship Game at No. 25 Bloomsburg (4-0, 1-0) on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
 
GAME NOTES: Edinboro has now won five straight games over Mansfield and leads the all-time series, 13-2 … win the victory, the Scots improve to 43-8 vs. PSAC East Division foes since the 2005-06 season … Edinboro entered the day averaging 83 points per game, second-best in the PSAC, a total that will rise to 85 points per contest following Saturday's result …Edinboro reached the 90-point threshold for the second time this season and set a new season-high for points … freshman guard Kylie Mason scored the first two points of her collegiate career with a pair of free throws late in the second half … all 15 players on the active roster saw playing time with 12 Scots working into the score sheet … Connolly narrowly missed matching her career-high of 12 points established last season … Blazetic moved into 23rd place on the Boro all-time scoring list with 1,039 career points and recorded her 600th rebound during the victory. The senior eclipsed her previous career-high of 25 points set on Jan. 14 vs. Lock Haven. The 13 made field goals were also a career-best.
