BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 2, 2012) – Last March, the Edinboro women's basketball team captured its second consecutive PSAC championship at the expense of Bloomsburg in a convincing title win. The Huskies extracted a measure of revenge Sunday afternoon with an 84-59 victory in a match-up of nationally-ranked teams at Nelson Fieldhouse.
The 15th-ranked Fighting Scots (3-2, 1-1 PSAC) were plagued by 25 turnovers while No. 25 Bloomsburg (5-0, 2-0) capitalized with hot shooting, connecting on 57 percent of its shots from the floor. The Huskies also turned Edinboro turnovers into 29 points of offense.
The two nationally-ranked squads matched each other evenly for the first 10 and a half minutes of play before the Huskies opened things up.
Darche' Jackson's basket with 9:27 left in the half brought Edinboro within one at 20-19, but it would be the last field goal the Scots would convert for nearly six minutes.
While Edinboro went icy from the floor, the Huskies took advantage, scoring the game's next nine points before a
Bobbi Baker free throw made it 29-20 with 4:40 left to play.
Aignee Freeland finally ended the futility from the field with a jumper to cut the deficit to seven with 3:34 showing on the first half clock. But while a 40-second blitz from Edinboro during the first half of Saturday's win at Mansfield changed that contest, the momentum immediately swung back in favor of the Huskies over a crucial span of 35 seconds.
Following the Freeland basket, Catherine Noack drained a 3 before a steal by Jocelyn Ford led to another jumper from Dana Wieller to grow the Huskies edge to double digits for the first time at 34-22. The Huskies would never relinquish control.
A
Kiara Brown jumper sliced the deficit back to 10 at 34-24, but Bloomsburg finished the half by outscoring Edinboro 9-3 to take a 43-27 lead into the break. Turnovers were key during the first half as Edinboro committed 14 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Edinboro would score the first five points of the second half to chip away to within 10 (42-32). The Huskies responded quickly by stretching their lead back to 16 in the next 90 seconds to re-establish control, though, never seeing their lead fall under double digits the rest of the way.
Kiara Brown led the Fighting Scots with a game-high 23 points along with three steals. For the first time this season, Edinboro had just one player in double figures as
Darche' Jackson was the next leading scorer for the Scots with nine points and eight rebounds.
Samantha Blazetic registered eight points and seven boards.
Bloomsburg used a balanced scoring attack as 10 players registered points, led by Danielle Derr who tallied 19 points off the bench. Dana Wieller netted 14 points and Kayla Oxenrider checked in with 13 points.
Edinboro will get right back into action as it hosts Davis & Elkins for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse. That game is part of the Edinboro Toys for Tots Drive where all fans are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy to receive free admission. In addition, the Toys for Tots collection bin will be in the McComb lobby all day Monday and Tuesday for donations.
