EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 4, 2012) – A second half surge keyed by senior
Kiara Brown allowed the Edinboro women's basketball team to break a tie with 10 minutes remaining and pull away late for a 79-60 victory over non-conference Davis & Elkins on Tuesday night at McComb Fieldhouse.
With the game tied 47-47 halfway through the second period, Brown launched the Fighting Scots (4-2) on a 23-3 burst over a four and half minute span. During the Boro explosion, Brown scored 14 of Edinboro's points and also had two assists. By the time the dust had settled, Edinboro boasted a 20-point advantage and held control of the contest. Brown's 3 with 5:37 left to play gave Edinboro a 70-50 lead and the Fighting Scots would not look back.
Brown finished with a season-high 26 points, five assists and four steals and also added four rebounds in a stat sheet-filling performance.
Samantha Blazetic added her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks and a pair of steals.
Darche' Jackson scored all 12 of her points during the second half and also finished with five boards and three assists.
Edinboro held a 31-23 lead at halftime and never trailed, but the Senators (1-4) proved to be a pesky foe. The Boro stretched its lead to 41-31 with 15:12 to play, but D&E embarked on a 14-4 run to tie the game at 45-45 less than three minutes later.
A steal and assist by Brown led to a fast break layup from
Bobbi Baker to take the lead back at 47-45, but two free throws from Page Turner tied the game again. Another fast break bucket from Baker off a feed from Brown gave Edinboro the 49-47 edge, one it would not relinquish as its senior guard buoyed the Scots breakaway.
It was a tale of two halves from the floor for the Fighting Scots as they could muster just 32 percent shooting (11 for 34) during the opening period. Edinboro was red hot from the field during the final 20 minutes, though, shooting at over 64 percent (20-31).
On the opposite end, Edinboro held D&E to 32 percent shooting (17-53) for the game and forced the Senators into 25 turnovers.
Baker was an important part of the Scots late run, scoring all of her nine points during the second half.
D&E had two players in double figures as Page Turner led the visitors with 14 points and seven assists and Maquasia Ferebee added 10 points.
The Fighting Scots return to PSAC play with their first action against a West Division foe at California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon.
