Box Score (New/Sortable Format) CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Dec. 8, 2012) – The Edinboro women's basketball team put together an all-around performance and never trailed while handing previously undefeated California (Pa.) its first loss, 70-51, on Saturday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots (5-2, 2-1 PSAC) received a dominating frontcourt performance from the combination of senior Samantha Blazetic and freshman Aignee Freeland. Blazetic entered the game as the PSAC's leading scorer and added to her numbers with her fourth double-double of the year as she finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, adding four blocks, three assists and two steals in 38 minutes of action.

While Blazetic has a long track record of strong showings as a 1,000-point scorer and the school's all-time leader in blocks, Freeland also has made a splash as of late. The reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Week registered her first career start on Tuesday in a win over Davis & Elkins and enjoyed her strongest game on Saturday. The York, Pa. native shattered her previous career-high with 18 points along with eight rebounds and a block in 39 minutes, also a career-high.

Kiara Brown added her usual scoring threat from the wing, tallying 18 points, five assists and three steals and Darche' Jackson dished out a career-high 12 assists for the Fighting Scots.

Edinboro never trailed during the contest, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage in the opening minutes. The Scots took command as they broke what was a 15-15 tie with 10:51 to play in the opening half, embarking on an 11-0 run as the Vulcans (5-1, 2-1) went over six minutes without a basket from the field.

A cold string followed for Edinboro, however, as the Scots went 4:01 without a field goal as Cal cut their deficit to just eight at 28-20. A traditional three-point play from Brown put Edinboro up 11 at 31-20. Cal attempted to pull closer before the half with a 3-pointer from Stephanie Michael to make the score 31-23, but a Blazetic jumper with seven seconds left sent the Boro to intermission with a 33-23 edge.

Cal hung around for the first part of the second period before another Boro run gave the visitors a stranglehold on the contest. With a 12-point lead, 52-40, and 8:28 on the clock, a jumper from Blazetic began a 10-2 breakaway to stretch the lead to 20 points for the first time and put the Scots firmly in control.

Edinboro shot a red-hot 59 percent (16-of-27) from the floor in the second half to pull away, and a season-best 50.8 percent (31-61) for the game. While Edinboro thrived from the field, Cal could find little in the way of buckets, struggling to a mere 26 percent (16-61) during the game as the Scots held the Vulcans, which entered the game averaging nearly 78 points per game, to a season-worst offensive output.

Ashley Hines led Cal with 13 points and five boards while Stephanie Michael also hit double figures by turning in 11 points.

Turnovers were also a key storyline as the Vulcans turned the ball over 22 times, and Edinboro outscored Cal in points off turnovers, 27-10.

The Fighting Scots now break for finals week and return to action at home by hosting the next PSAC crossover weekend Dec. 18-19 against Cheyney and West Chester.
