EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro Fighting Scots volleyball squad fought off a tough comeback from the Ursuline Arrows to claim their first victory of the season.
Edinboro (1-8) found their offense as they amassed 61 kills in the match. Leading the charge was sophomore
Tabitha Meeks, who had a career-high 25 kills on the night. Freshman
Marah Maycock continues to impress as she posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Fellow freshman
Breanna Gardner pitched in 11 kills for the Fighting Scots.
Assisting much of the offense was the dual-setting combo of
Katie Felix and
Erin Schatzle. Felix had 24 assists and Schatzle finished with 20. Defensively, libero
Haley Marett was the star with 28 digs while Felix added 18 and Schatzle had 10.
Ursuline (1-9) was led by Alex Leister who had 11 kills and 13 digs and Maureen Kelly who had seven kills and 17 digs. Hitting errors and Edinboro's solid defense haunted the Arrows as they combined to get an equal number of kills as errors, giving them a .000% hitting percentage, including two sets where they had more hitting errors than kills resulting in a negative hitting percentage.
Edinboro jumped out to take the first set 25-22 and were leading the second set 11-3 before Ursuline charged back, ultimately downing the Fighting Scots 25-22. The Arrows rode that momentum to a 25-18 set three victory, but in the fourth set, Edinboro stormed back and secured a 25-22 victory, evening the match at two games apiece. The third set was even through eight points before Meeks went on a tear, amassing seven of her 25 kills and leading Edinboro to a 15-12 final decision, giving the Fighting Scots a 3-2 match victory. Ursuline could not stop the 5-8 sophomore as she continually pounded down kills through the Ursuline double blockers.
Edinboro travels to Notre Dame College in Ohio to take on LeMoyne and Notre Dame (Oh.) Sept. 16 then hits the road to the first PSAC Crossover of the year in Lock Haven and East Stroudsburg. Those matches take place Sept. 21 and 22. The Fighting Scots next home match is scheduled for Sept. 28 as they welcome IUP at 7 p.m. followed by a match against California (Pa.) on Sept. 29 with a start time scheduled for 3 p.m.
