Kutztown Stymies Scots, Snaps Edinboro Winning Streaks

Laurel Lindsay led all scorers with 13 points for Edinboro.
Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 11, 2013) – The Edinboro women's basketball team started cold and never gained traction, seeing its six-game winning streak end in a defensive battle with visiting Kutztown, 46-40.

Edinboro (9-3, 6-2 PSAC West) opened the game on a three-point basket from Samantha Blazetic, but that would turn out to be the only lead of the game for the Fighting Scots. Kutztown (7-5, 5-3 East), fresh off a victory vs. No. 12 Indiana (Pa.) in its last contest, limited Edinboro to a season-worst 24.6 percent shooting (15 for 61), a mere 10.5 percent (2-19) from three and was able to stifle a comeback attempt from the Scots. In the process, Edinboro saw its 22-game regular season home winning streak also snapped.

Following Blazetic's opening three, the Golden Bears embarked on a 12-2 run to capture a 12-5 advantage in the opening 10 minutes. That would be the largest offensive stint of the game for either side as neither team could get into much of a rhythm offensively.

Kutztown held Edinboro to single digits for nearly 15 minutes and was able to take a 20-17 lead into halftime as the Golden Bears shot just 27.6 percent (8-29) and Edinboro stood at a 16.7 percent mark (5-30) after the game's opening period.

A three from Laurel Lindsay tied the game at 28-28 with 11:21 to play and the teams traded baskets as Tanejha Smith converted a layup and Aignee Freeland responded with a lay-in of her own for another tie at 30-30. Kutztown managed a 7-1 run over the next three minutes to again take control, however.

The Boro trimmed their deficit to two (42-40) following a basket from Darche' Jackson with 2:09 left to play, but Kutztown kept Edinboro off the board the rest of the way. Edinboro forced a turnover and had an opportunity or tie or take the lead, but a three attempt from Lindsay rimmed out with 1:17 remaining.

An offensive foul on the Kutztown end gave the ball back to the Scots with another chance to draw even, but another missed shot followed and the Golden Bears were again able to clear following a rebound from Advia Campbell. A pair of free throws from Ashley Wood gave the visitors a two possession lead and just 32 seconds left before a Boro turnover effectively put the game away. Natalya Lee closed out Edinboro's attempt at a rally with two final shots from the line to end the scoring.

Lindsay led all scorers with 13 points while Blazetic recorded her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Wood paced the Golden Bears with 12 points and Campbell chipped in with 10.

Edinboro will look to bounce back as it wraps up crossover play by hosting East Stroudsburg on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.
