(Jan. 12, 2013) – Twenty-four hours made a world of difference for the Edinboro women's basketball team (10-3, 7-2 PSAC) as the Fighting Scots exploded offensively and bounced back from a disappointing loss to Kutztown by racing past East Stroudsburg (4-9, 3-6), 95-60, on Saturday evening at McComb Fieldhouse.
One night removed from a 40-point performance against Kutztown, the lowest regular season offensive output by Edinboro in 31 years, the Fighting Scots surpassed that total by halftime as five players reached double figure scoring.
Hope Mancini powered the Scots' offensive turnaround by pouring in a career-high 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting including four three-pointers in 14 minutes off the bench.
Samantha Blazetic recorded 15 points and Aignee Freeland tallied her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Mancini and
Kerry Connolly provided a spark off the bench as Connolly filled the stat sheet with 11 points and five rebounds as well as career highs in assists (seven) and steals (six).
East Stroudsburg started strong, opening the game on a 9-2 break and maintained the lead through the first 10-plus minutes of the game. The Warriors went ahead by seven at 17-10 following a layup from Michelle Boggs, but a jumper from
Darche' Jackson on the other end began an 11-0 run by the Scots to take their first advantage of the day at 21-17.
The Warriors closed to within one (30-29), but Edinboro finished the half with an offensive flurry, led by three baskets from beyond the arc by Mancini. The Scots concluded the period on a 12-0 run over the final 2:43 to take a 42-29 lead into intermission.
The visitors trimmed the Boro advantage to single digits at 44-35 out of halftime, but another Boro run opened up the game for good. Connolly drained a three to again push the edge to double digits and begin a 16-0 explosion. Within three minutes, Edinboro suddenly led, 60-35 and ESU never again threatened.
Edinboro shot 45.3 percent (34-75) for the game and committed a season-low nine turnovers while dishing out a season-high 25 assists. A total of 14 players saw action for the Scots and 11 registered points. The Boro outscored ESU in bench points, 46-6.
Andrea Veres paced the Warriors with a game-high 22 points while Ryann Fiascki and Halie Cintron each finished with 10 points.
Edinboro remains at home for a showdown against nationally-ranked Gannon as PSAC West play begins in earnest at McComb Fieldhouse at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
