EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 16, 2013) – Senior
Kiara Brown delivered a game-high 26 points and the Edinboro women's basketball team led for all but four minutes, leaving little room for doubt in its 65-52 victory over No. 6 Gannon on Wednesday evening at McComb Fieldhouse.
Gannon (15-2, 9-1 PSAC) entered the game riding a 14-game winning streak, but by the end of the night it was Edinboro (11-3, 8-2) that brought the visitors' streak to an end while winning its fifth consecutive game over its local rival.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring on a layup from Doriyon Glass, but it would end up being Gannon's only lead of the game. Edinboro answered with a 12-4 sprint to lead by six in the early going. Gannon closed to within four (12-8), but the Fighting Scots began what would be a trend all night long – each time the visitors appeared to be swaying the momentum, Edinboro supplied a response. A 6-0 run gave the Boro its first double digit lead at 18-8 halfway through the opening period.
Gannon, which had previously tasted defeat only at the hands of top-ranked Ashland in the season-opening Disney Tip-Off Classic, closed to within five at 24-19 with 6:59 remaining in the half. The Scots scored the next seven points, however, to lead by 12 with 4:39 left in the half and would eventually take a 36-26 lead to intermission.
Throughout the night, Edinboro battled with foul trouble as six players picked up two fouls apiece during the opening half and quick second half fouls against
Laurel Lindsay and
Samantha Blazetic forced the starting duo to take seats. With a lineup of three freshmen on the floor, Edinboro received multiple contributions to stifle Gannon's comeback efforts.
Lauren Hippo scored seven points while in relief during the second half including a three-point dagger to stretch the Boro lead to 14 at 47-33. Another Boro rookie,
Bobbi Baker played strong defense off the bench with three key steals to help maintain the double digit advantage.
Gannon pulled to within 11 at 55-44 following a traditional three-point play from Jen Papich with 7:35 to play, but Brown connected on a jumper on the other end and the Golden Knights would never pull closer. Blazetic, limited to 23 minutes due to foul trouble, finished the game with a three to put the exclamation point on the upset.
Edinboro held Gannon without a three-pointer as the Golden Knights, who entered the game shooting a PSAC-best 40.2 percent from three, shot 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. The Fighting Scots forced Gannon into 21 turnovers which resulted in 23 points for the Boro. Edinboro also won the battle of the boards with a 33-28 edge.
The Fighting Scots shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the field and connected on 6-of-18 shots from three while shooting a season-high 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line. Gannon finished at 40.8 percent from the field (20-49) and converted on 12-of-16 free throws.
Darche' Jackson scored six points and dished out eight of Edinboro's 19 assists and accounted for six rebounds and three steals. Lindsay tallied nine points and Aignee Freeland scored eight points with nine rebounds. Hippo's seven points were a new career-high.
Nettie Blake paced Gannon with 21 points and eight rebounds and Papich netted 12 points.
With the win, Edinboro draws to within a game of Gannon in the PSAC West standings. Edinboro returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. start.
